Big 12 Conference: Week 7 Power Rankings

Adam SimoneOct 10, 2011

Week 6 in college football is now complete, and it's time to go over the updated power rankings for the Big 12.

The contenders and the pretenders in the Big 12 are starting to separate. Three teams remain undefeated through Week 6. Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma moved to 2-0 and are the front runners to win the conference.

The Texas Longhorns had to be the most disappointing team this week. They came into the Red River Rivalry undefeated but got dominated by the Sooners.

10. Kansas Jayhawks (2-3, 0-2)

1 of 10

There are not many positives for the Jayhawks. They have the worst defense in college football, giving up 49.4 points per game. Kansas got off to a fast start, scoring first in Stillwater, but Oklahoma State scored 56 straight points to lead at halftime 56-7.

Unfortunately for Kansas, it only gets tougher from here. The Oklahoma Sooners come to Lawrence next week. It's very possible that Kansas could give up 50+ points again this coming weekend.

Last Week: Lost to Oklahoma State 70-28

This Week: Oklahoma @ Kansas

9. Iowa State Cyclones (3-2, 0-2)

2 of 10

It looked like Iowa State might be competitive with Baylor early, as they led 7-0 after the first quarter, but Baylor outscored them 49-19 the rest of the game.

Receiver Darius Reynolds had a good game for the Cyclones. Reynolds had seven catches for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

This week Iowa State travels to Columbia, Missouri, to take on the Missouri Tigers. It will be another tough game for Iowa State. Missouri has started 0-2 in the conference and will be very motivated to get a win.

Last Week: Lost to Baylor 49-26

This Week: Iowa State @ Missouri

8. Missouri Tigers (2-3, 0-2)

3 of 10

Missouri had a pretty disappointing game this week against Kansas State. The Wildcats did a great job of keeping Missouri's offense off the field and controlling the game.

James Franklin only completed 54 percent of his passes and had an interception on the first drive of the game. Missouri really struggled to put drives together and put points on the board.

The kicking struggles of Grant Ressel continued Saturday. Ressel missed two more field goals, which puts him up to six missed field goals this season.

Missouri has a must-win game this week against Iowa State. With a 2-3 record, the Tigers are in danger of not making a bowl game for the first time in six seasons.

Last Week: Lost to Kansas State 24-17

7. Texas Longhorns (4-1, 1-1)

4 of 10

Well, Texas made it pretty clear Saturday that they are nowhere near close to being able to contend for the Big 12 title.

Texas struggled from the very beginning this week against Oklahoma. The Longhorns offense committed five turnovers, which made it very difficult for the Texas defense. I really didn't think the Longhorns played that badly on defense, as the Sooners scored three of their seven touchdowns on defense.

You just can't give a team as good as Oklahoma that many extra possessions. It doesn't get any easier this week for Texas. The Longhorns will battle an Oklahoma State team that is rolling right now.

Last Week: Lost to Oklahoma 55-17

This Week: Oklahoma State @ Texas

6. Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-1, 1-1)

5 of 10

Texas Tech lost this week but still moves up two spots in the power rankings. The Red Raiders put up 523 yards against A&M but fell short 45-40.

Texas Tech has the seventh-ranked offense in college football, led by quarterback Seth Doege. Doege has 17 touchdown passes and only one interception.

I think another impressive thing about the Tech offense is their balance. They average 170 rushing yards per game. Eric Stephens leads the team with 114 yards per game and eight touchdowns.

This week Tech welcomes the undefeated Kansas State Wildcats to town. It will be interesting to see if Kansas State can slow down Tech's high powered offense like they did with Baylor and Missouri.

Last Week: Lost to Texas A&M 45-40

This Week: Kansas State @ Texas Tech

5. Baylor Bears (4-1, 1-1)

6 of 10

Baylor started off slow against Iowa State but ended up rolling to a 49-26 win. The Bears put up 603 yards of offense, and over half of it was on the ground.

Terrance Ganaway rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Robert Griffin threw for 212 yards and rushed for another 103 yards.

The Bears have the third-ranked offense in the country and will get to prove how good they are again this week at Texas A&M. Texas A&M's defense isn't very good, so look for Griffin and Kendall Wright to put up big numbers.

Last Week: Beat Iowa State 49-26

This Week: Baylor @ Texas A&M

4. Texas A&M Aggies (3-2, 1-1)

7 of 10

Texas A&M was able to hold on this week in the second half to get a win, but it still wasn't pretty for the Aggie defense. Texas A&M allowed 40 points and 523 yards to Texas Tech.

A&M's pass defense ranks 120th in college football, giving up 347 passing yards per game. Their defense will get another test this week against the Baylor Bears. Baylor averages 323 passing yards per game and is led by Robert Griffin and Kendall Wright.

Texas A&M still has a slight chance of winning the Big 12, but this week is an obvious must-win at home against Baylor. I'm looking for another shootout in this one.

Last Week: Beat Texas Tech 45-40

This Week: Baylor @ Texas A&M

3. Kansas State Wildcats (5-0, 2-0)

8 of 10

I'm still not sure how good this team really is, but it's pretty clear Bill Snyder is one of the best coaches in the history of college football.

The Wildcats did a great job of controlling the game and keeping the Missouri offense off of the field. Kansas State won the time of possession battle 38:28 to 21:32.

Collin Klein only threw it for 112 yards, but he rushed for three touchdowns. Kansas State continues to be very one dimensional, but they keep winning. Against Missouri they rushed it 54 times and only threw it 16 times.

This week they take on Texas Tech, and they will continue to try to control the ball on the ground. Tech's rush defense allows 224 yards per game, which ranks 115th in the country.

Last Week: Beat Missouri 24-17

This Week: Kansas State @ Texas Tech

2. Oklahoma State Cowboys (5-0, 2-0)

9 of 10

What a dominating performance for the Oklahoma State offense against Kansas. The Cowboys didn't even have to play their starters in the second half, and they still put up 70 points.

Oklahoma State ranks first in the country, scoring 51 points per game. Brandon Weeden completed 85 percent of his passes against Kansas for five touchdowns.

This week Oklahoma State travels to Texas and will look to stay undefeated and keep marching towards their game against Oklahoma later in the year.

Last Week: Beat Kansas 70-28

This Week: Oklahoma State @ Texas

1. Oklahoma Sooners (5-0, 2-0)

10 of 10

Oklahoma keeps on rolling towards a Big 12 title and a BCS bowl. The Sooners absolutely dominated Texas this week 55-17. The Oklahoma defense accounted for three touchdowns in the big win.

Landry Jones threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Broyles finally had a big game against Texas with nine catches and 122 yards and one touchdown.

Oklahoma basically has a bye game this week against Kansas, so look for more big numbers out of Jones and Broyles.
