Projected BCS Rankings 2011: Georgia Tech and 3 Teams That Shouldn't Be Top 10

Eric BowmanOct 10, 2011

The first BCS rankings of 2011 is set to come out on Sunday after Week 7 game play, and as always, there is a ton of speculation as to who should be at the top.

Without a doubt, the top three should be LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma, as they have truly set themselves ahead of everyone else—but I guarantee the Top 10 won't look anything like the current AP and Coaches polls.

That's just how it is with the BCS rankings, as they will likely have teams that shouldn't be in the Top 10 or ranked at all. They typically get the top teams correct by the season's end, but the rest of the poll is often littered with mistakes.

Here are three teams that have a good chance of being the BCS Top 10 after next week—but really shouldn't.

Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets are No. 12 at the moment, and because they're 6-0 right now, it will greatly help them in the BCS rankings. The computers love undefeated teams—but the reality is that the Yellow Jackets have yet to beat anyone of worth.

You could argue that their best win came a few weeks ago against North Carolina, but that doesn't help their credibility.

Georgia Tech has two, maybe three marquee matchups this season. If the Yellow Jackets are in the Top 10, they will be a product of an easy schedule, exposing the flaws of college football.

I'm not saying the Yellow Jackets aren't good—they are, but they don't deserve to be a Top 10 team until they beat a quality opponent.

Arkansas

The Razorbacks are No. 10 in the AP Poll right now, but when the BCS rankings come out, they should be on the outside looking in.

Arkansas is 5-1 at the moment, which is good given the fact that they've had a rough schedule. Most people knew they wouldn't get past Alabama, but they bounced back strong, beating Texas A&M and Auburn.

Their one loss is to a top-three team, but it won't be enough to put them in the Top 10. The Razorbacks are a definite Top 15 team, but the wins over Auburn and Texas A&M don't help as much as Arkansas would like.

Michigan

The Wolverines are surprisingly 6-0 and  No. 11 in the country. Starting the season off with five straight homes definitely helps a team achieve that, so it will interesting to see how the second half of their season goes.

Michigan hasn't beaten an opponent of worth, but they do face off against the No. 23 Michigan State Spartans this weekend. If they lose they will, of course, have no shot at the Top 10. But if they're 7-0, the BCS will pour love all over them.

However, the Wolverines aren't a Top 10 team in the country, and a win over the Spartans isn't as great as it might sound.

Give Michigan credit for exceeding expectations, but they're not Top 10 worthy just yet.
