BCS Poll 2011: 5 Teams That Will Not Be Happy on Oct. 16
The time is almost here as the very first BCS rankings are just one week away. Everybody always awaits the first standings to see which sleeper stands in case they run the table, but there are always a few teams that get way too much love from the BCS voters. So of course, if some voters (Harris & Coaches not AP Poll) think highly of a team, some ignorant fans will just assume they are among the best teams in the country (hello, Georgia Tech).
There are five teams that will be extremely disappointed once the BCS rankings are released next weekend. I refuse to wait a week, so I'll break down and name my five teams that will be not pleased once the rankings officially come out next weekend.
Oklahoma Sooners
1 of 5Most Sooner fans will expect to crack the top two, but I doubt they will have any chance of being the top-ranked team in the country in the BCS rankings.
They should remain number one in the Coaches Poll, which is one third of the formula used for the BCS Rankings.
Oklahoma has knocked off two decent teams in Texas and Florida State, but the Seminoles have been awful, losing three games in a row.
The Sooners should understand if they win all of their games, they are a lock to be playing in the BCS National Championship; however, they may not crack the top two until Alabama and LSU play each other on November 4th.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
2 of 5The Cornhuskers just pulled off their greatest come-from-behind victory in their seven-point victory over Ohio State.
Nebraska is currently ranked 14th, but they have not defeated any good teams other than perhaps Washington. The schedule has been a cake walk thus far, and it would have helped had they put up a fight against Wisconsin.
They may be ranked inside the Top 15, but they almost have no chance of cracking the Top 12 with teams behind them and slightly ahead of them accomplishing a lot more.
Teams like Michigan, Arkansas, Georgia Tech and even Illinois have solid victories over their conference and non-conference foes.
The defense has been a serious letdown since Jared Crick has not been healthy, and the front four has suffered. They have been gashed, allowing 167 yards per game (80th).
Nebraska better be able to run the table heading into their contest with Michigan or else they could be completely out of the Top 25 BCS Rankings.
Virginia Tech Hokies
3 of 5They have been extremely disappointing, and after the defense allowed 519 yards to Miami, I would have actually dropped the Hokies completely out of the Top 25.
Logan Thomas had a tremendous comeback victory against Miami as he totaled 338 yards with four touchdowns. Also, David Wilson ran for 128 yards, and thank God, because the Hokies were able to just barely pull off the victory, 38-35.
In the victory, Miami's Lamar Miller gashed the Hokies for 166 yards on the ground along with a touchdown. This Hokies defense has not been great in consecutive weeks and somebody should take notice. Allowing 842 yards in two weeks is not Top 25-worthy.
Most "experts" honestly think the Hokies will be up in the Top 20 in the BCS Rankings, but I am unsure if they will be in the Top 25. If Beamer's boys continue to get into shootouts, they will fall flat on their faces and never see the BCS Rankings at any point this season.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
4 of 5Any Irish fan will tell you how they are the best team in the nation and how nobody has the same level of awareness or smarts that the Golden Domers have.
Notre Dame has two losses (USF and Michigan), and you can't expect them rank inside the Top 20 quite yet. They might sneak in the Top 25, but they better get some help from the teams that are ranked from 20-25.
With a bye week, I would not bank on the Irish being ranked high by any means, and relying on other teams' outcomes is never going to help you meet your expectations.
In time, the Irish might be in the Top 10 and surely the Top 20, but it may take a bit more time than most Domers would like to anticipate.
Texas Longhorns
5 of 5Their quarterback situation is a mess with Case McCoy and David Ash, and I am unsure if they can even hang with Oklahoma State next weekend. If they suffer another blowout loss, they may be out for good.
They haven't knocked off a single ranked team since BYU has struggled mightily for their standards, and when Iowa State is considered your best victory, you cannot expect to be ranked in the Top 20.
Longhorn nation even headed early for the gates when the Sooners were thumping them by six touchdowns.
Five turnovers is a disgrace for Texas football, and if they cannot manage to pull off an upset against Oklahoma State next weekend, the Longhorns may never return in the BCS Rankings.
