Georgia vs. Tennessee: Mark Richt Gets 100th Victory at UGA and Other Fun Facts
With a 20-12 victory over Tennessee this week, Mark Richt became only the third University of Georgia head coach to win 100 games. The other two are the legendary Wally Butts and the only coach to bring an AP National Championship to Athens, Vince Dooley.
Richt joined this elite group by besting Vince’s son, Derek Dooley, the second-year head coach for the University of Tennessee in Neyland Stadium on Saturday.
After Saturday’s victory, with a career record of 100-36, Richt became the fastest coach in UGA history to reach the century mark in terms of victories. Butts got victory No. 100 in his 141st game and Dooley accomplished the feat in his 144th game at Georgia.
Isaiah Crowell on Pace for 1,000-Yard Season
True freshman phenom Isaiah Crowell had his lowest rushing total so far this year against the Vols with 58 yards on 19 carries. Still, Crowell is on pace to rush for over 1,000 yards on the season.
Last season, two other freshmen ran for 1,000 yards in the SEC, Auburn’s Michael Dyer and South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore. Dyer and Lattimore both led their teams to the SEC championship game last season. Hopefully for the Dawgs, this trend will continue.
Georgia Defense Shuts Down Tyler Bray
Tyler Bray came into this game throwing at least three touchdown passes in Tennessee’s first four games. Going back to last season, Bray had had nine straight games with at least two touchdown throws.
Saturday, the Georgia defense held Bray to zero touchdown passes. Bray also had his worst game of the season in terms of passing yards, going 18-of-33 for 251 yards.
Blair Walsh Back on Track
Senior place kicker Blair Walsh, regarded as one of the best kickers in the country coming into the season, had struggled so far this season. Walsh has had an unexpectedly slow start as he came into the game at 6-for-12 on the season.
Walsh appears to have righted the ship, going 2-for-2 against the Vols, connecting from 35 and 23 yards out. This was only Walsh’s second game of six this season without a missed field goal, the first coming against Coastal Carolina where Walsh was also 2-for-2.
Malcolm Mitchell Finally Gets a 100-Yard Receiving Game
Standout freshman wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell has been the Bulldog’s leading receiver all season long . Mitchell has also been quarterback Aaron Murray’s favorite target in the first half of the season, catching a team-high 19 passes for 382 yards and three touchdowns.
Two weeks ago, Mitchell flirted with a 100-yard game against Ole Miss, racking up 93 yards on three catches. This week against the Vols, despite leaving midway through the third quarter, Mitchell finally got his first 100-yard game, gaining 126 yards on three catches.
Mitchell left the game with a pulled hamstring, but with Vanderbilt coming up next week, then a bye week before facing Florida, Mitchell should have plenty of time to heal and be ready for the Gators in Jacksonville.
