College Football Rankings: 10 Teams We're Still Shaky About
Week 6 of the college football season has come and gone. Several teams continue to make their case as an elite team.
How many of these teams can live up to their early hype?
LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma have been nearly flawless to start the season. Stanford, Wisconsin and Boise State are half-step behind the elite but have the talent to hang around.
Beyond those six teams, there is a steep drop off in the Top 25. Several solid teams, but many face at least one glaring weakness.
Week 7 will weed out a few more pretenders from the contenders. Who are the pretenders?
Here are 10 teams we're still not sure about.
Baylor
1 of 10The Baylor Bears are 4-1. Their biggest test came against the Kansas State Wildcats. It is also their only loss.
The Bears have had unexpected success so far this season. That success will be put to the test in Weeks 7 and 8, in which The Bears will face Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, respectively.
Robert Griffin III has been spectacular as Baylor's quarterback and leader. Wide receiver Kendall Wright has been a major beneficiary of Griffin's elite ability in the pocket.
Defensively, the Bears are still unproven. The competition has not been heavy, yet the Bears are still surrendering almost 29 points per game.
The Bears are a solid team. Griffin's presence makes them worth watching every Saturday.
However, their defense and ground attack are questionable. This could be exploited in the next two Bears' games.
Arizona State
2 of 10Arizona State is off to a 5-1 start. Their only loss came at the hands of Illinois.
Week 7 will provide a huge test for the Sun Devils. Arizona State must travel to Autzen Stadium to face the warp-speed Oregon offense.
Brock Osweiler has been consistent for the Sun Devils behind center. Aaron Pflugrad is his top target. The Sun Devils need a playmaker on the outside to stretch the field.
The Sun Devils' defense isn't the most talented unit overall, but they do have Vontaze Burfict. Burfict would give any defense a fighting shot.
Arizona State has persevered through early tests against Missouri and USC. However, they did lose to the Fighting Illini.
This week's showdown with Oregon will show just how good these Sun Devils are.
Virginia Tech
3 of 10Virginia Tech is mostly untested but 5-1 nonetheless. The Hokies' only loss came against their only test, Clemson.
Quarterback Logan Thomas has not proven he can win a game with his arm.
David Wilson and Josh Oglesby are the saving grace for the Hokies coming out of the backfield. Without their presence, the Hokies' offense would struggle tremendously.
Defensively, the Hokies are very similar to every other Bud Foster defense. Aggressive, athletic and not afraid to take risks. Foster always has his Hokies in pursuit of the football at all costs.
The Hokies will finish the season with at least 10 wins. The ACC is weak.
In their own conference, the Hokies may be a favorite. In the big picture, quarterback concerns could hold them back from larger success.
Kansas State
4 of 10Bill Snyder and the Kansas State Wildcats are winning games. Currently 5-0, the Wildcats travel to Texas Tech in Week 7.
The Wildcats are very good on the ground. Collin Klein is a dangerous dual-threat quarterback. However, the Wildcats lack a formidable passing attack. The Big 12 is tough to survive in without an aerial threat.
Defensively, the Wildcats are 17th in the nation in scoring defense, surrendering 16.5 points per game.
No one wants to get into a ball control battle with the Wildcats. If the Wildcats start facing early deficits, their offensive strategy could be problematic.
A solid team in Manhattan, but a lack of explosion on offense will hurt them in the long run.
Illinois
5 of 10Illinois is off to a 6-0 start in 2011. Their biggest victory came in Week 3 against Arizona State.
Nathan Scheelhaase is a gamebreaker behind center for the Fighting Illini.
However, the talent surrounding Scheelhaase could prove to be questionable against larger competition. As dynamic as Scheelhaase can be, he won't be able to do things alone against the top teams in the Big Ten.
Defensively, Illinois is solid. Their front four leads the defense and creates consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Illinois has been a pleasant surprise in the Big Ten. Their continued success will depend on secondary offensive options.
If one or more emerge, Scheelhaase could take this team to the next level. If not, Illinois will come back to Earth sooner rather than later.
South Carolina
6 of 10The South Carolina Gamecocks are 5-1 heading into their Week 7 matchup with Mississippi State. Auburn has been the only team to stifle the Gamecocks thus far.
The SEC is the most competitive conference in the country. If the Gamecocks cannot find consistency at quarterback, they could face disappointment. Stephen Garcia has been benched in favor of Connor Shaw.
Shaw doesn't need to win games alone. Marcus Lattimore can do that. Lattimore is arguably the best back in the nation, and gives the Gamecocks a chance to win every week.
Defensively, the Gamecocks have talent but have struggled at times. This could get worse as they enter the heart of their SEC schedule.
The Gamecocks have a ton of potential, but if the quarterback situation is not rectified it could spell disaster.
West Virginia
7 of 10West Virginia currently sits at 5-1. Their one loss came against the No.1 LSU Tigers in a colossal non-conference matchup.
Geno Smith has proven himself as an upper echelon quarterback in college football. He runs a very efficient Mountaineers' offense. He has many weapons at the skill positions and he knows how to use each one to their maximum potential.
Defensively, the Mountaineers surrender over 22 points per game.
This may not hurt them in the sub-par Big East, but it does in the big picture.
The Mountaineers are a dangerous squad, but their defense isn't there yet.
Oklahoma State
8 of 10The Oklahoma State Cowboys are 5-0 with their biggest victory coming against Big 12 foe Texas A&M.
The Cowboys have the second best passing attack in the nation. Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon form one of the most dangerous quarterback-wide receiver duos in nation.
Defensively, the Cowboys give up nearly 30 points per game. The Big 12 is very tough to survive in without at least an average defense. So far, the Cowboys have been below average.
The key for the Cowboys is Joseph Randle. He has seven touchdowns on the ground so far. He will need to provide balance on offense for the Cowboys all season.
If Randle can continue to keep defenses honest, the Cowboys aerial attack will continue to flourish.
However, if their defense does not improve, it may not matter.
Georgia Tech
9 of 10The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 6-0. However, they have not faced a single ranked opponent.
Sooner or later, their top-ranked rushing offense will face be tested. If their passing attack cannot pull players out of the box, the Yellow Jackets one-dimensional offense could be exploited.
Defensively, Georgia Tech has not been great despite the lack of competition. That spells bad news for when the Yellow Jackets face the top ACC contenders later on.
The Yellow Jackets are sixth in the nation in scoring offense. Weak opponents make this statistic misleading.
Continued success for Paul Johnson's crew will depend on their defense and how many plays their passing offense can create.
Michigan
10 of 10New Michigan head coach Brady Hoke has the Wolverines sitting at 6-0 to start the season. The Wolverines have faced mediocre competition outside of Notre Dame and possibly Northwestern.
The Wolverines are led by Heisman hopeful Denard Robinson, who is as dynamic as anyone. He makes plays with his feet, and can hurt you with his arm if given the time to scan the field.
Michigan is seventh in the nation in rushing offense, largely because of Robinson's electric ability in the open field.
The Michigan defense is second in the nation in scoring defense. This is skewed because of lopsided victories over cupcake non-conference opponents.
No doubt, the Michigan defense has improved from last season. However, they are still not an elite unit.
Great defenses will force Robinson to win games in the pocket, but he is not ready to win a game exclusively with his arm.
