Heisman Trophy Tracker: Stock Up, Stock Down for Candidates in Week 6

T.J. McaloonOct 8, 2011

The Heisman Trophy cannot be won in Week 6 of the college football regular season. However, it can be lost after a horrific statistical game or that player's team losing.

Today, we saw a number of great performances from these kids. Some performances were in big games against rivals while a State Fair was going on around them. Then there were others from candidates against teams that were of lesser talent. One would expect athletes from these games to have breakout days with eye popping stats.

So, after two-thirds of a full day of college football, who's stock went up? And, who's stock went down?

Stock Up: Landry Jones, Oklahoma

1 of 16

Wow, did Landry Jones just have an "Eff You" game to those doubters of the Oklahoma quarterback. Coming into this game, all that Landry did was win. He won against Florida State on the road, and he won against all of the weaker non-conference opponents he played. But, he didn't have big stats.

And today? Today, he won against the hated Texas Longhorns and put up big stats.

Landry was the star of today's game completing 31 of 50 throws for 367 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions.

The final score of this year's "Red River Rivalry": 55-17. Boomer Sooner.

Stock Down: Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina

2 of 16

Marcus Lattimore is having a good season for a running back. But, his last two performances have ruined the sophomore's chances at winning this year's Heisman Trophy.

Last week, against a horrible Auburn Tigers' run-defense, he only ran for 68 yards on 17 attempts finding the end-zone just once, in a loss.

Today, while the other offensive weapons for South Carolina were having huge games. Marcus had a very okay game. Only "okay" because when his team was winning 54-3, he should have had over 150 yards with two or more touchdowns.

Instead, he only had 102 yards with zero touchdowns.

Stock Up: Geno Smith, West Virginia

3 of 16

Geno Smith is the best player in college football that nobody knows about. He plays in the Big East and has this West Virginia Mountaineers team primed for a BCS Bowl birth.

Today, he went off against the UCONN Huskies.

His final stat line was 27 completions on 45 attempts for a whopping 450 yards and 4 touchdowns.

For the season, Geno has a 12 touchdowns to 3 interceptions ratio. If he continues to have games like the one today during WVU's Big East schedule, then you'll be hearing more and more about this player and the Heisman Trophy.

Stock Down: LaMichael James, Oregon

4 of 16

Okay Oregon supporters, before you jump all over me for putting James on "Stock Down" after the monster game against Cal on Thursday Night, it's only because of the elbow injury he suffered.

For those who weren't aware of the phenomenal game James had, his stat line reads as such: 30 carries, 239 yards and 3 touchdowns. That's how you make yourself a favorite for the Heisman Trophy.

But, the dislocated elbow that LaMichael suffered has him out for an undisclosed time.

He says that he will be back as soon as possible. However, according to The Seattle Times, the injury requires at least several weeks of healing.

If that's the case, his chances of this year's award are done.

Stock Up: A.J. Jenkins, Illinois

5 of 16

A.J. Jenkins went into complete beast mode against the poor Indiana Hoosier defense today. Coming into today's game, Jenkins already led the Big Ten in receiving yards and was fourth in the NCAA with 633.

Today his final stat line against IU was: 6 receptions,182 yards and 2 touchdowns.

This wasn't Jenkins' biggest game yet on the season. That game was last week against Northwestern when the Senior put the team on his back with 12 receptions, 268 yards and 3 touchdowns.

But, today's big game against Indiana is sure to move him up in overall stats as he continued his streak of slaying his opponents.

Stock Down: Tajh Boyd, Clemson

6 of 16

Tajh Boyd came into this week's game against Boston College as number one in the ACC with 14 passing touchdowns and 1,459 passing yards. He had this Clemson team playing at a level that no one thought they could execute at this year.

He was the leading Heisman candidate for the Tigers.

But, a hip injury to Tajh in the third quarter took him out of the rest of the game.

According to College Football Talk's Twitter feed, Tajh's x-rays and MRI came back negative, but his status for next week's game against Maryland is questionable.

For now, his stock dropped, but if his hip isn't too damaged, the stock has a great chance to rise again.

Stock Up: David Wilson, Virginia Tech

7 of 16

Entering this week's Virginia Tech game against Miami (FL), David Wilson led the ACC in rushing yards (639) and attempts (107) while ranking in the top 5 in touchdowns scored (5).

Today, the Hokies leaned on David to help them overcome a Miami team that would not surrender.

Wilson led the Hokies with 23 carries for 128 yards on the ground; while catching another 4 passes for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Stock Down: Darron Thomas, Oregon

8 of 16

Darron Thomas is a victim having a teammate that is as high of a Heisman Trophy favorite as he is - LaMichael James.

For example, in Oregon's last game against California, LaMichael James went for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Thomas only had 198 yards passing and 3 touchdowns with an interception.

While Thomas would be a Heisman hopeful on any other team, James is the most likely candidate from this team given the easy comparison.

Is it fair for Thomas? No. But, it's the price he pays for playing next to an elite athlete and the stats he put up.

Stock Up: Ray Graham, Pittsburgh

9 of 16

Ray Graham is the only reason why this Pittsburgh Panthers team is 3-3 on the season. The rest of the Pittsburgh offense has definitely let him and his chances for a Heisman trophy down. For instance, if it wasn't for Pitt's quarterback throwing three interceptions against Rutgers today, Pitt could have easily won this game.

Graham on the day had 165 yards on 25 attempts with one touchdown. But, without a solid quarterback, their lackluster record will continue to overshadow his personal stats.

For the season, Graham has two games of over 200 rushing yards and two games of three touchdowns.

If Ray played on a team from the SEC, Big-Ten, Big-12 or Pac-12, he would be on everyone's Heisman watch list. Instead, he plays in Pittsburgh where an "easy" win like unranked Rutgers continues to be a challenge.

Stock Down: Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State

10 of 16

There is no doubt that Justin Blackmon is one of the most talented receivers in college football today. He has the size, skill and talent that NFL scouts look for in future first-round draft picks.

Today, his Oklahoma State Cowboys won 70-28 over Big-12 Conference member Kansas.

Looking at these stats, you would think that Blackmon had three to five touchdown catches with 200 yards receiving.

But instead, Blackmon had 2 touchdowns, which is good, but only 84 yards on 8 catches, which is just not great.

Stock Up: Denard Robinson, Michigan

11 of 16

Another week of college football and another week of big numbers from the man they call "Shoelace" Denard Robinson.

Love him or hate him, he continues to put up great stats while leading this Michigan team to wins. Tonight against Northwestern, Robinson was responsible for four of Michigan's six touchdowns - throwing for two while rushing for two.

If you still aren't convinced that Denard is the entire Michigan offense, then take a look at Michigan's total yards of offense tonight. Michigan had 529 total yards with Denard responsible for 442 of those yards.

Stock Down: Trent Richardson, Alabama

12 of 16

Trent Richardson will carry his Alabama team to a BCS Bowl Game this year. However, if he has mediocre games like he had tonight against Vanderbilt, he will not be as likely to win this year's Heisman Trophy.

He did lead the team today in rushing with 107 yards on 19 carries, scoring once. But, his stats were down because he split carries with sophmore Jalston Fowler, thus hurting his chances at the Heisman.

He will have plenty of opportunities left this season to come back to the top of Heisman lists. So, hopefully one game with okay stats during a blowout win for 'Bama will not completely ruin Trent's chances.

Stock Up: Andrew Luck, Stanford

13 of 16

Andrew Luck had another game where he threw for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns in yet another Stanford victory, as the Cardinals won tonight 48-7 against Colorado.

So far, through six games this year, Andrew Luck has thrown 14 touchdowns with only two interceptions. Given his high rate of touchdown completions, it's no surprise that Stanford has won every game by at least 26 points.

Luck should have another big game next week as Stanford travels to Washington State.

Stock Down: Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M

14 of 16

The Texas A&M quarterback has gone through a lot this year. He's seen his A&M team blow back-to-back double digit half time leads while he had big offensive numbers.

This week he almost saw it happen again. Instead, they pulled through while he had poor numbers.

For the night, Tannehill only had 188 yards passing with 1 touchdown.

Stock Up: Kellen Moore, Boise State

15 of 16

Kellen Moore will make the final group of Heisman Trophy Candidates at the end of this season. He will have great numbers from playing in the Mountain West Conference the rest of the year. It's not his fault, Kellen is a great quarterback playing against lesser talent.

For example against Fresno State last week Kellen completed 23 of 31 passing attempts for 252 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Those are good numbers, that he will consistently put up every week from here-on-out.

Idle: Russell Wilson, Wisconsin

16 of 16

Through six weeks of the season Russell Wilson has been one of the best players. He's been a big reason why Wisconsin is a perfect 5-0 and ranked in the top 5 in both polls.

Wisconsin was off this week so Wilson didn't have a chance to improve his Heisman chances. But, he shouldn't be left off of this altogether just because he didn't play.

While Wilson stock has remained even this week his cool factor has defiantly gone up with the emersion of his Wrestling themed Heisman campaign @RussellManiaXVI
