Case McCoy: Why Texas QB Will Not Be as Good as Older Brother Colt
Did anyone else watch that Texas-Oklahoma game and just shake his head at how far away Texas is from being a dominant college football team again?
Don't get me wrong, Oklahoma is a great college football team and they deserve all the credit in the world for this game. But I think that this game was more of a case of Texas really being that bad, than it was of Oklahoma really being that good.
You can point out a handful of problems that the Longhorns have right now, but at the end of the day, it all has to start and finish with the lack of production from the quarterback position.
Sophomore QB Case McCoy has that last name that might strike fear in opponents because they think back to how good his older brother Colt was at Texas. But in reality, Case McCoy is nowhere near as good as his older brother, at least at this point in time. And it certainly doesn't look like he will be in the future, either.
There are several factors to back my reasoning up, but I'm going to start with the most obvious reason, and that is his ability to lead his team to victories.
Colt won more games as an FBS quarterback (45) than anyone else in NCAA Division I history. He had a knack for winning and was a leader out on the field, which we aren't really seeing from Case during his first two years in college.
The second factor would be based on his pure talent level. Colt made plenty of arid decisions during his sophomore season at Texas, but he still let it fly, passing for over 2,500 yards in all four seasons, and over 3,000 yards in three of those four.
In addition to his passing stats, Colt appears to also be a better athlete than Case, which showed by his running ability. Colt rushed for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns during his four years at Texas. On the other end, Case has rushed for negative-15 yards on nine attempts this season.
He has not shown any type of ability to scramble, and in return, he often crumbles in the pocket when he faces a talented pass rush.
Case McCoy still has the chance to be a solid college quarterback, despite his poor showing in today's game against Oklahoma.
But it just seems like he will always be looking up to older brother Colt.
