It's Called Soccer: 4 Ways to Make It America's Favorite Pastime

Adam HartOct 7, 2011

Soccer has never been America's favorite sports. In the early 20th century it was baseball and then, it turned to American football.

But soccer, or as everyone else in the world calls it, football, is the world's most popular sport.

In this article, we will determine how to make the people of America enjoy to play, watch and love soccer.

Move International Stars to the MLS

Everyone in America knows Peyton Manning and Derek Jeter. Yet many Americans don't know one player from the MLS.

One way to change that is to move internationally successful players to the MLS to attract attention.

Once David Beckham made a move to the LA Galaxy, soccer had a sudden jump in popularity. Americans appreciated soccer more when they knew that there was one of the best players in the world playing in their league.

The same thing happened when Arsenal, France and Barcelona star, Thierry Henry, made a transfer to the New York Red Bulls.

When a well known international figure moves to the U.S., more people paid attention to soccer.

Continuing to do could result in an even larger MLS fan base.

Move MLS Stars to Europe

It also works the other way round. It is a well known fact that not even the most die-hard MLS fan can debate that European soccer is much better than the MLS.

So what do we do about it?

We move American players to the EPL or La Liga to show initiative and the ability to take on a challenge, like America international goalie Tim Howard—who is putting in quite the effort as Everton's starting keeper—and Clint Dempsey who is showing what he is made of for Fulham.

If these players can do well and improve in the EPL, they can influence other MLS stars like Landon Donovan to make a European move.

If all goes well, improved American players can bring a USA national team to glory.

Show EPL Games on Network Television

"Football, on Fox."

That line has probably been heard by millions of Americans every Sunday when they plop down in their comfy chair, myself included, to watch three to six hours of American football action.

Enough football. Instead of watching football, watch soccer because soccer is fast paced and wouldn't take as much time to show.

It is also much more exciting. It' s a goal or nothing.

There isn't something like a field goal.

Watching more soccer will not only increase the soccer fan base in the U.S., but could influence a younger generation to be a soccer oriented America.

America, after doing much better than anyone expected in the 2010 World Cup, left the U.S. with a soccer fever.

If other people in the world being to call the sport soccer, then Americans may be more likely to embrace it, and it could bring along a relapse of the fever.
