AP Coaches' Poll: Six Week 6 Games That Will Shake Up the Rankings

Johnathan CaceOct 8, 2011

Following the Week 5 games, the AP and Coaches’ Polls looked a lot different than they had a week before. Eight Top 25 teams lost and it made way for teams like Texas and Georgia Tech (who have yet to play a ranked team) to shoot up in to the Top 15.

While it will be tough to match that level of insanity, Week 6 does have three games between ranked opponents and a handful of other teams on upset alert.

Here are six games that are sure to affect the rankings.

Honorable Mention

1 of 7

East Carolina vs. Houston—If Houston wins and at least one team drops out of the Top 25, the Cougars should slide into the rankings

Miami vs. No. 21 Virginia Tech—If Miami hadn’t lost to Maryland this game would still be on the list but they won’t be able to get into the rankings with a win. Virginia Tech would drop out with a loss.

No. 22 Arizona State vs. Utah—Arizona State’s lone loss is on the road and Utah is better than their 202 record.

No. 3 Oklahoma vs. No. 11 Texas

2 of 7

The Red River Rivalry is always one of the most intense and exciting games in all of college football. Oklahoma comes in as the strong favorite and the undefeated preseason number one team in the country.

Texas has yet to play a ranked opponent and is breaking in a bunch of new faces on and off the field so the chances they pull of the upset are small.

Regardless, this game is the highest ranked game of the day and that always plays a big role in the Top 25.

No. 17 Florida vs. No. 1 LSU

3 of 7

This will be LSU’s fourth ranked team but the first one they get to play at home. Florida comes in without their starting quarterback fresh off a throttling by Alabama last week.

With a loss here, Florida could drop completely out of the rankings. But if they win we will have a new number one team heading into the BCS rankings.

No. 15 Auburn vs. No. 10 Arkansas

4 of 7

Auburn catapulted back into the Top 25 after beating then No. 10 South Carolina on the road. Arkansas rebounded by coming back to beat Texas A&M at Cowboy’s Stadium after getting crushed by Alabama in Week 4.

The Tigers have not played well on the road under Gene Chizik but managed to edge out a close win on the road last week. But even if those woes are over, Arkansas has a very underrated team that should win pretty easily at home.

Missouri vs. No. 20 Kansas State

5 of 7

Missouri may be 2-2, but they lost their games against two ranked opponents. Kansas State is 5-0 with a win over a ranked Baylor team.

The Wildcats were able to win last week because they dominated the time of possession nearly 2:1. The Tiger’s offense is run heavy this year so don’t expect that to happen this time around. State will need a much better performance in order to get the win.

No. 24 Texas A&M vs. Texas Tech

6 of 7

Texas A&M is still ranked despite losing twice this season while Texas Tech is not ranked after being 5-0 but without beating a ranked opponent.

The winner of this game is in the Top 25 and the loser is out. It is that simple.

No. 12 Michigan vs. Northwestern

7 of 7

Northwestern is an entirely different team with quarterback Dan Persa and he is finally healthy enough to play. However they just lost their starting running back so the upset alert here goes from red to orange.

Michigan may be ranked 12th but they have not done anything other than barely beat Notre Dame to get there.

If the Wildcats figure out a way to slow down Denard Robinson, Michigan could lose and drop completely out of the rankings.
