Arsenal FC: Don't Blame Arsene Wenger, Don't Be Delusional!

Ishan ChowdhuryOct 6, 2011

A very poor start to the season for the Gunners has been marked with them managing to secure only seven points out of a possible 21. It is the worst start that Arsenal has endured not only since Arsene Wenger took charge, but dating all the way back to 1975.

The popular belief of many supporters seems to be that it is Arsene Wenger who is the cause of all the problems and sacking him would almost instantly change our fortunes. However, I do not share the same school of thought.

The board comes out with astronomical, record-breaking figures of pre-tax profits on an annual basis in a time of such recession, which leads the supporters to believe that there are plenty of funds at the disposal of the manager. The board talks about how Arsene has a reserve of something like £40 million to spend on player transfers, regardless of sale of players.

But at the same time, whenever Arsene addresses the public, he talks about how Arsenal can't match the spending power of some of the other big clubs in England, let alone the world.

There has to be some glitch.

Plus, look at it this way—you have to go and buy yourself a cell phone that will be paid for by your company; why would you choose to get a black and white Nokia model when you can just as easily get an Apple iPhone, all without spending a penny from your own pocket?

Whatever you may say or think, Arsene Wenger is not stupid.

What one has to remember is that he is not spending his own money when he tries to procure players. Therefore, he wouldn't really be thinking about saving a couple of million here and there to add it to his holiday fund. He gets paid a weekly/monthly salary. I'm obviously not denying the fact that he does get incentives for spending as little as possible and still managing to get the team as high up the table as he can.

However, incentives are set by the board (or at least they are terms that the board agrees to). If that is such a big problem for people, maybe they should blame the board, who are at present just hiding and letting Arsene take all the blame. But that's probably what he's paid for, so I'm not looking to generate any sympathy for the French manager either.

Not everyone can be Bill Gates, or even Steve Jobs for that matter. And maybe it's time for us, as supporters of this club, to realize that we will probably not win the league for quite a few years to come.

This is not because of Arsene Wenger's policy; it's because here at Arsenal, winning football games sure does help, but it is not the priority of the board anymore. The priority is simply to give control to the guy who can generate the maximum profit with as little investment as possible.

And if the need of the board is profit, then I don't think there is a better man for the job than the Professor. He is an economist after all, isn't he?
