San Antonio Spurs and 6 Teams Who Could Benefit from a Shortened Season
We are less than one month away from when the NBA season is scheduled to start. Labor talks continue while players and fans alike wait for something to happen.
If there is an NBA season, it will most likely be shortened thanks to the lockout.
The last time this happened, the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA championship.
By the Spurs being one of the oldest teams in the NBA, they could very well benefit from a shorter season again.
Here’s a look at some more teams who could also benefit from it.
Miami Heat
1 of 6Despite a slow start, the Miami Heat made it all the way to the NBA Finals.
Not winning the whole thing though still made their season look like a failure.
The Big Three should have all of the kinks worked out this time around. The Heat will be motivated and should be able to take advantage of the shorter season.
Los Angeles Lakers
2 of 6The Los Angeles Lakers were one of the oldest teams in the NBA.
Age along with injuries to Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum slowed down the Lakers last season.
For the Lakers, a shorter season may make it difficult for them to get used to new coach Mike Brown.
But the team may have to learn fast as it could be now or never for the current Laker team.
Chicago Bulls
3 of 6The Chicago Bulls lead the league in wins during the regular season last year.
No one expected the Bulls to be that good, especially considering they were without Derrick Rose, Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah playing together for much of the season.
The Bulls made it all the way to the conference finals, but their leading man Rose looked drained by the end of it all.
If the Bulls can continue their success from last year, a shorter season would leave their players energized by the time the playoffs start.
Dallas Mavericks
4 of 6The NBA champions proved last season that you don’t need three of the NBA’s superstars win it all.
What the Mavs did have was a determined Dirk Nowitzki, crafty vets in Jason Kidd and Jason Terry and role players who could get their jobs done.
The Mavs know that they may only have another year or so with their current team, so a shorter season would benefit them greatly.
As long as they have the same chemistry that they had last season, the Mavs can pick up right where they left off and get another championship in Dallas.
Boston Celtics
5 of 6The original “Big Three” have started to show their age.
Although Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are still three of the NBA’s top players, they may only have a good year or two left in them.
Rajon Rondo has played at a high level, but the Celtics will need to put pieces around him in the future once KG, Pierce and Allen slow down for good.
San Antonio Spurs
6 of 6Although they technically may not be the oldest team in the NBA, when people think of old, they usually think of the Spurs.
Despite this, the Spurs had the best record in the west during the regular season.
After surprisingly being bumped out of the playoffs in the first round and rumors that Tony Parker was going to get traded, the Spurs got rid rising star George Hill instead.
Time could be slipping away from the Spurs, but they could win it all in a shorter season much like they did in 1998.
