Cincinnati Bearcats Do Not Deserve BCS Invitation
When West Virginia lost to Pittsburgh recently, the Cincinnati football program finally had something to really cheer about. Just in case you don't know it, Cincy received an automatic invite to a BCS bowl by clinching the Big East crown.
But other than the fact that Cincy won the Big East crown, is the team deserving of this invitation?
The answer to the question is "No!"
It appears that most sports writers are debating whether Boise State or Ohio State should get the at-large BCS bowl berth. The debate goes on and on with both sides stating their cases.
However, I think that these so-called sports writers should do a lot more in-depth analysis and consider asking the BCS officials why they automatically award BCS bowl berths to conference champs who don't deserve to be invited, such as Cincinnati.
I know that there are those of you who feel that Cincy does deserve the invite. However, how can a two-loss team like Cincy that gets blown out by UConn, 40-16, and only beats Akron by two points, receive the invite over teams like Texas Tech and Boise State.
And let me remind you that Cincy hasn't had the most stellar record over the years. Yes, they've been improving, but they are absolutely undeserving of the BCS bowl berth. Given their schedule, they should've had to run the table.
Consider this: If Boise State or Texas Tech played Cincinnati, the outcome wouldn't be pretty. Either team would defeat Cincy in a rather resounding fashion.
Odds makers and the public would be cognizant of this. Both Boise State and Texas Tech would be installed as favorites against Cincy on a neutral field.
Isn't the BCS about rewarding the most successful teams in the country (during the current year, that is) with the biggest bowl berths and subsequent payouts?
Of course not. It's all about monopolizing the money for the BCS conferences. That's it.
Don't be surprised if Cincinnati loses to the University of Hawaii this coming weekend.
