Liverpool's Luis Suarez in Bizarre Outburst over English Premier League Title

Peter WebsterOct 5, 2011

So, perhaps we've all thought it: Liverpool aren't going to be good enough to win the English Premier League title this season. But, for one of our star players to come out and say it after just seven games? Unacceptable!

Luis Suarez has been a godsend since the departure of Fernando Torres. He has made the transition from Dutch football with Ajax look easy, and looks well-suited to life in the Premier League. However it seems that the front man from Uruguay doesn't hold out much hope for the rest of the season when it comes to Liverpool's title chances, stating:

"The main reason why it is so difficult is because the two Manchesters and Chelsea are unreachable. But we can win the cups."

Now, personally, I have two opinions on this comment. My first is that it is bizarre that a player would come out and say this publicly and risk spreading discontent through the rest of the squad when there is such a big game looming, and particularly when the season is so young.

If Suarez doesn't think Liverpool are good enough to catch any of the teams at the top with 31 matches remaining, perhaps he thought that before the season began. A victory over the red devils of Manchester United in our next fixture would see that six-point deficit halved, and three points in football is hardly an unassailable lead, no matter who you are. There's a risk that the other squad members will look at their star performer and think, "If he doesn't believe, then why should we?" That sentiment is exactly why such a comment is so dangerous.

My second thought is that Suarez is perhaps trying to relieve some pressure on the Liverpool squad by writing off their chances early doors. Everyone who loves the beautiful game understands how pressure affects performance (think Kevin Keegan's Newcastle in the 1995-96 season, or even Rafael Benitez's rant at Alex Ferguson a few seasons back), so maybe Suarez thinks that such an outburst would make people forget Liverpool as a title challenge and allow them to go about their season methodically and without expectation.

This is highly unlikely, however, given the massive exposure Liverpool have in the world market, the money spent in preseason and the huge expectations that the fans pile on the team.

Ultimately, I fear the comment may dent Suarez's seemingly bulletproof reputation on Merseyside. I haven't read any comments from Kenny Dalglish thus far, but what manager or supporter would ever want their players to be conceding defeat so early on?

Certainly not I.
