Fantasy Football Week 5: Waiver Wire Replacements for Superstars on Bye Week
Just because your fantasy stud has a bye week this week doesn't mean you need to throw in the towel. This is where recognizing talent on the waiver wire can be the difference between winning and losing.
Be proactive and fill the holes on your team with guys who can score you points and make it through this week. While they may not have the same production that your stars see on a weekly basis, they'll soften the blow and produce enough points to get you by.
Here are the fantasy studs who are out this week on a bye week and some diamonds in the rough who can replace them.
Kendall Hunter
1 of 5Star Running Backs on a Bye Week: Ray Rice, Peyton Hillis, Steven Jackson
The 49ers carved up the Eagles last week and while Frank Gore exploded for a monster day, it didn't keep Hunter from racking up 100 all-purpose yards of his own. Hunter is taking on a bigger role and the 49ers offense is coming around, which makes him a great replacement.
The Bucs allow 101 yards a game on the ground and the 49ers are starting to develop an offensive identity. They'll be looking to build on their new two-back system and should utilize Hunter more than ever.
Matt Hasselbeck
2 of 5Star Quarterbacks on a Bye Week: Tony Romo
Tony Romo is on a bye week and if you were planning on putting in Sam Bradford, Rex Grossman, Colt McCoy or Joe Flacco, you are out of luck, as they are on a bye week as well.
Matt Hasselbeck is your guy this week. With James Harrison out, the Steelers aren't nearly as scary. They have the No. 1 pass defense in the league, but Hasselbeck has torched teams for an average of 280.5 yards. Every week people have reasons not to pick up Hasselbeck and every week he makes them regret it.
David Nelson
3 of 5Star Wide Receivers on a Bye Week: Miles Austin, Brandon Marshall, Dez Bryant
David Nelson is one of the products of the Bills' high-octane offense. While Fred Jackson is obviously the man to watch this week against the Eagles, the 49ers proved last week that their star-studded secondary isn't immune to giving up big gains.
With Stevie Johnson on Nnamdi watch, Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely look to Nelson in what is sure to be a high-scoring affair. Nelson only has one touchdown on the season, but you can expect him to add to that total this week.
Jermaine Gresham
4 of 5Star Tight Ends on a Bye Week: Jason Witten, Fred Davis
Jermaine Gresham is starting to evolve into the security blanket the Bengals hoped he would be. He's coming off a 70-yard performance where he also hauled in a touchdown. Andy Dalton is coming into his own and the Bengals are starting to really put it together.
With AJ Green surging, you can expect Gresham to slip by defenses. He's on a surging team and people have failed to take notice of his steady improvement. Pick him up before someone else does.
Titans
5 of 5Star Defenses on a Bye Week: Baltimore Ravens
Go after the Titans defense this week. They are playing the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger and Rashard Mendenhall are banged up. With their awful line and weapons falling all over the field, the Steelers are going to have serious problems moving the ball on the Titans.
The Titans are one of seven teams to allow less than 300 yards per game and have seven turnovers and 10 sacks to boot.
