John Brantley Injury: Everything You Need to Know About Backup QB Jeff Driskel
As if things couldn't get any worse for Florida Gators fans, now they have. After losing to the Alabama Crimson Tide, quarterback John Brantley is expected to miss next week's game against the LSU Tigers. That now means that freshman quarterback Jeff Driskel will be the starter against one of the top defenses in the country.
Here are a few things to know about the freshman quarterback, who will lead the Gators against the No.1 team in the country.
Driskel Is a Dual-Threat Quarterback
1 of 3Once Jeff Driskel stepped on campus, he was often compared to quarterback Tim Tebow. Of course, they were referring to his running ability, because Driskel has a much better arm.
His 6'4", 235-pound frame is big, but he would surprise you at just how fast he is. The kid can flat out run by defenders and then use his big frame to lower his shoulder and fight for extra yards.
He had a 31-yard run against Alabama last weekend on a 3rd-and-long to extend the drive for Florida.
This is something that John Brantley doesn't have and is just another thing that opposing defenses have to prepare for.
Driskel Has a Very Strong Arm
2 of 3I can talk about Driskel's arm all I want to but fast forwarding the video to about 1:12 and seeing it for yourself is priceless.
Driskel can easily throw the ball 60 yards downfield, which should be very effective, especially in this offense with the tons of speed that Florida has.
Driskel Had a Ton of Interest
3 of 3Although Driskel considered a baseball career, he ended up choosing the Florida Gators to play football. He also had a ton of interest from schools like LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
Jeff Driskel is the real deal, he just needs the experience. He has all of the tools and is extremely athletic—to the point where he can be a solid Division I quarterback.
He can throw the ball well, run and extend plays with his feet. With a little coaching from Charlie Weiss, the Florida Gators could have the next great quarterback under center.
