Oklahoma State Football: Justin Blackmon and 4 Top Performers This Season

Bradlee RossOct 2, 2011

Oklahoma State’s football team has many top performers, and that list starts with star wide receiver Justin Blackmon. However, Blackmon isn’t the only guy on that squad that has put them at the 4-0 mark. It has been a true team effort.

In fact, there are five guys who are especially responsible, and you might just be surprised who the last one is.

Here are the top performers on this team, a group headlined by a guy named Blackmon.

Justin Blackmon

1 of 5

So far this season, Justin Blackmon has 38 receptions for 450 yards and four touchdowns. That’s over a quarter of the Cowboys’ passing yards and touchdowns.

The reigning Biletnikoff Winner is the most talented player on this team and was ready for the NFL last year.  According to head coach Mike Gundy, Blackmon lives for competition and is always looking to score.

That fire and spirit is a big reason these Cowboys are ranked fifth in the country.

Brandon Weeden

2 of 5

Brandon Weeden may be the old man in the Cowboy locker room, but the old man can play.

Weeden is one of the nation’s leaders in passing yards and has thrown for 10 touchdowns so far this season.  He has also thrown six interceptions this year, which has caused some concern.

However, he didn’t throw a single one in Oklahoma State’s biggest game so far this year against Texas A&M, a game in which he went 47-60 for 438 yards and thrust himself onto the national stage.

Weeden brings a maturity to this team that it will need if it’s going to win championships.

Brodrick Brown

3 of 5

Brodrick Brown is one of the best defenders in the Big 12. The 5’8” junior cornerback is one of the leaders on the underrated Cowboy defense.

Brown has 16 tackles and has already matched his interception total from last year with two. He’s a big play corner who can change the momentum of a game in just one play. Against Texas A&M, Brown accounted for eight tackles and one of the second-half interceptions that helped derail the Aggies.

If Brown continues to play this well for the rest of the year, the Cowboys will have the best season in school history.

Joseph Randle

4 of 5

Joseph Randle might be the least-sung hero of this Cowboys squad. On an offense known nationally for its passing game, Randle has rushed for 461 yards and seven touchdowns in four games this year.

The true sophomore out of Wichita, KS does all the little things right. He runs fiercely north and south, is a good pass blocker, and can catch passes out of the backfield (he’s caught 16 for 121 yards).

Randle is a gamer and a big part of why the Cowboy offense is so hard to stop.

Mike Gundy

5 of 5

People don’t often think of the head coach when discussing the top performers on a team, but one can’t ignore Mike Gundy’s impact on this team.

His calm, thoughtful sideline demeanor keeps the Cowboys calm as they play faster than any team in the FBS. He also cares for his players deeply, on and off the field, and has shown the guts to defend them and discipline them as needed.

For example, when he became head coach, Gundy immediately suspended most of the trouble makers on the team, understanding the importance of team chemistry. Perhaps his best claim to fame is his infamous rant in which he defended a player from an unfair news article.

He even cares enough to dance for them. (Skip to around the 3:20 mark.)
