Nebraska Cornhuskers Fall to No. 14 in AP and No. 15 in Coaches Polls
So much for Nebraska’s much anticipated entrance into the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska was humiliated in Wisconsin 48-17. In his postgame press conference, coach Bo Pelini apologized to the Cornhusker fans for his team’s embarrassing performance.
As a result of Nebraska’s performance, the Cornhuskers fell to No. 14 in Associated Press poll and No. 15 in the Coaches poll. This is where Nebraska should have been ranked in the polls to begin the season. After weak performances against Tennessee-Chattanooga and Fresno State, Nebraska looked like a team that was very overrated. Nebraska did not belong in the top 10, and Saturday night’s debacle in Wisconsin proved it.
Where do the Cornhuskers go from here?
After the game, many players told the local media in Nebraska that they cannot wait to have another shot at Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game. I do not believe Nebraska will get another shot at Wisconsin, but if they did, the results would be similar.
Coach Pelini said at his postgame press conference that there would be changes in personnel next week. I look for those changes to come in the defensive secondary. All season, the Nebraska secondary has looked horrible. Yes, they are inexperienced, but after five weeks of the season, someone should have stepped up by now.
Next week, Nebraska hosts unranked Ohio State. Who would have thought that Nebraska would be ranked No. 14 and Ohio State would be unranked when these two teams meet next Saturday?
Nebraska has its work cut out for them as they try to work their way back up in the polls. The first step is to prove they can beat Ohio State in what can only be called a down year for the Buckeyes.
What does not kill you will only make you stronger. Let’s hope that the Cornhuskers come out of the Wisconsin game a stronger team.
