Heisman Watch 2011: Who's Better and Why, Tyler Wilson or Denard Robinson?

Joe PenkalaOct 1, 2011

As the fifth week of the college football season hits the midway mark, some players have begun to separate themselves as true contenders for the Heisman Trophy.

It appears that in 2011, the Heisman Trophy will go to one of the many talented quarterbacks that are playing at a top level so far this year.

Two of those quarterbacks having an outstanding year so far are Tyler Wilson and Denard Robinson. Both are in the clubhouse today with impressive numbers and this is how they stack up against each other.

Tyler Wilson: Heisman Moment

1 of 9

After falling behind 35-17 to Texas A&M this week, Wilson led the Razorbacks all the way back and capped it off with a two point conversion play that tied the game and sent the Aggies reeling as they relived that they were about to see a repeat of last weeks second half collapse.

Denard Robinson: Heisman Moment

2 of 9

After finding a wide open receiver around midfield against Notre Dame, Michigan got themselves into field goal range quickly and appeared to be sending the game to overtime.

Before kicking the field goal, Denard Robinson had time to take one shot at the endzone and made it count as he connected with Roy Roundtree with two seconds remaining.

Tyler Wilson: Heisman Game

While Tyler Wilson has been consistent so far this year, helping the Razorbacks come back from being down 35-17 will not be something that is forgotten.

Against the Aggies, Wilson threw for 510 yards and three scores and gave the nation something to talk about.

Denard Robinson: Heisman Game

4 of 9

No surprise that Denard Robinson's Heisman moment came during his best game so far this season.

While playing under the lights at Michigan's Big House, Robinson was electric. Robinson threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding 108 yards rushing and another score.

Tyler Wilson: Heisman Downfall

After looking sharp through the first three games of the season, Tyler Wilson was presented with his first challenge of the year by heading on the road to face Alabama.

While Wilson did not play awful against the Tide, he did throw for under 200 yards and threw an interception. Overall, Wilson was just unimpressive.

For all the impressive things that Denard Robinson did against Notre Dame, there was a negative that came from this game.

Before Robinson and the Michigan offense found magic in the fourth quarter of this game, Robinson had thrown three interceptions and was looking average through three quarters.

Based on the schedule that Michigan has played so far, the only legitimate team they have gone up against is Notre Dame, which could point towards future struggles as the competition gets stronger.

Tyler Wilson: Future Heisman Opportunity

7 of 9

Tyler Wilson is in a perfect position to spend some time establishing himself as a Heisman candidate and then gets to close the year out against LSU on the road.

After his first road game against Alabama did not go as well as he had hoped, this game will give him the best opportunity to close the season strong and leave a lasting impression in the minds of voters.

Denard Robinson: Future Heisman Opportunity

8 of 9

Denard Robinson saw the same thing happen last year. He got off to a big start against lesser talent and then once the Big 10 schedule got difficult, Robinson dropped off in both production and in Heisman voters eyes.

If Robinson can get into the heart of conference play and put up big performances against teams like Michigan State, Nebraska and Ohio State he will greatly improve his chances of winning the Heisman Trophy.

Conclusion

9 of 9

At the end of the day, if you are going to hitch your wagon to one of these quarterbacks you have to go with Tyler Wilson.

Wilson will continue to put up big passing numbers while limiting turnovers and will also receive a boost based on the competition he will face in the SEC.

On the other side of the equation, Robinson has done an outstanding job against bad teams and will likely fade away again once the level of competition picks up.
