LSU Football: Is No.1 Ranking Blessing or Curse for Tigers Title Chances
The LSU Tigers have looked like the best team in the country heading into Week 5 of the college football season, and in return, they are indeed ranked No.1 in nearly every poll known for man.
But is being ranked No.1 in the country necessarily a good thing?
Let's think back to last year's college football season.
We saw Oklahoma ranked No.1 in the BCS rankings at one point last season, and they followed that with a surprising loss to Missouri. We saw they same thing with Alabama when they lost to South Carolina and then Ohio State when they lost to Wisconsin.
It has traditionally been difficult for these teams to hold onto that No.1 ranking.
LSU survived its first test of being the top ranked team in football with a convincing 35-7 SEC win over Kentucky earlier today. But the Tigers will have some greater challenges coming their way soon.
Les Miles' team will host No.12-ranked Florida next week, followed by back-to-back-to-back games against Tennessee, Auburn and Alabama. If they can get through that stretch unbeaten, you have to believe that LSU is in the drivers seat for a National Title bid.
Personally, I don't believe that a ranking attached to a team is a good or a bad thing. The Tigers' proved that this week by avoiding a letdown against Kentucky.
LSU is going to get plenty of national media attention regardless of if they are No.1 or No. 20 in the country. That is the territory that comes with being a top-tier program, playing in the best conference in the country.
If anything, perhaps that No.1-ranking helps the Tigers and provides them the necessary confidence to get through this daunting schedule they face ahead.
One thing is for certain and that is that LSU has certainly earned that ranking up to this point.
No questions asked.
