Kentucky vs. LSU: 5 Halftime Adjustments the Wildcats Should Make
Today the Kentucky Wildcats take on the No. 1 ranked LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge. Can the Wildcats dethrone the nation’s top ranked team and produce another historic upset similar to 2007?
Here are five adjustments the Wildcats need to make in order to come out of today’s game with the win.
1. Bring Extra Protection for Newton
Kentucky needs to bring more protection for Newton in the second half. The Tigers’ constant pressure up the middle has given Newton little to no time to make quality throws.
2. Stop the Big Plays
The Wildcats need to keep LSU’s big plays contained. Kentucky has done a good job forcing the Tigers into tough third downs, but, LSU's high-octane offense is capable of a huge play at any time. If UK wants to stay in this game, they need to keep the big play in check.
3. Find a Rhythm
Kentucky’s offense has had little to no success in the first half. The Wildcats failed to gain a single first down in the entire first quarter. In the second half, Kentucky needs to find their offensive rhythm. This should be done by running short outs and screens that will give Newton some easy completions.
4. Stop Tigers on Long-Yardage Downs
Kentucky has been doing a great job leaving the Tigers in long-yardage situations. Despite this, LSU has been able to convert on a number of long third downs. UK’s D needs to step up and stop the Tigers' offense when the situation is in their favor.
5. Dial Up the Pressure on 3rd Down
The Wildcats need to start bringing more pressure on third down to keep LSU QB Jarrett Lee on his heels. If Kentucky gives Lee too much time, he will continue to pick apart the Wildcats' secondary.
