College Football Rankings: 5 Teams Definitely Dropping After Today
Entering the first Saturday of October has given an opportunity to sit back and think about which teams are here for good and which ones will start dropping like flies.
Are the Florida Gators for real or were their opponents below average?
Plus, there are a few other teams in college football that have yet to be tested and are undefeated at the moment. The question remains, can the 21 unbeatens hang on to dear life and remain perfect or will this be the weekend where the upper echelons start to fall?
I take a dive into which teams will slowly star to drop down if not completely out of the rankings in today's games.
No. 14 Texas A&M
1 of 5Will the real Aggies please stand up?
Texas A&M suffered a tough one-point loss to Oklahoma State at home and better bounce back in a hurry or else they will be dropping out of the rankings faster than you can say Tannehill.
Ryan Tanehill has not played well at Dallas Cowboys Stadium going back to last year's bowl loss to LSU, where he threw three interceptions. Take note that he is coming off a three interception performance in their loss to Oklahoma State last weekend so things are certainly not going to get any easier.
Plus, Arkansas has a legit offense going for themselves, though they have struggled as well. Tyler Wilson like Brandon Weeden has a ton of viable options to spread the wealth to.
The return of defensive end Jake Bequette could go a long way for the Razorbacks, but the defensive speed the SEC brings is always something to be aware of.
The Aggies just seemed a bit out of control and disorganized on offense last weekend, but they are not the fastest and most gifted team offensively. Tannehill struggles when the pocket breaks down and this Razorbacks defense has some speed of their own similar to Oklahoma State.
I look for this game to be a shootout today, but the Aggies should fall just short of winning as well as just out of the top 25 rankings.
No. 15 Baylor/No. 24 Illinois
2 of 5While Robert Griffin III has throw for more touchdowns (13) than incompletions (12) I would not be shocked one bit if his Bears fall to a talented and under the radar Kansas State squad.
The game is on the road in a tough environment and Baylor has not been tested the last few weeks since their opening upset victory over TCU. Griffin has been unable to get much production from his defense which plays right into the hands of a K-State offense that loves to chew out the clock and control the time of possession.
Illinois is another team that has soared up the rankings when many expect if they were even going to make a bowl game this season. While they still have ways to the Illini to be back as far as becoming a relevant program in the Big Ten.
However, going up against a quiet Northwestern team that returns Dan Persa could spell disaster. They just came off a bye week where they suffered a tough loss to Army two weeks ago. Can Northwestern pull off the upset?
Despite being listed as ten point 'dogs I give the 'Cats a tremendous chance to pull off the upset since they are playing close to home in a series that has been fairly even against Illinois (NW has won three of last five).
No. 13 Clemson Tigers
3 of 5Clemson comes into this weekend's game sky high in confidence and momentum, but they must travel to Lane Stadium against a Virginia Tech Hokies team most do not know anything about.
How good is Virginia Tech? We know Clemson is pretty darn good at the moment after upsetting both Auburn and Florida State at home, but can they win on the road against the Hokies?
Survey says, no!
Clemson has never been able to deal with adversity and they may face a few tough situations in their hostile environment in Blacksburg.
Tajh Boyd has been sensational threading the needle to freshman sensation Sammy Watkins all season long.
Bud Foster and Frank Beamer may be favored in this game by the "experts" though the average fan truly believes this is Clemson's year to make a deep run towards a BCS bowl and beyond. Before we all just claim Clemson as last year's Auburn let's keep one thing in mind: their defense!
Clemson's defense has been really bad this season and eventually it will get exposed by a legit Hokies team. Ranking 85th against the run allowing 175 yards a game and ranking 73rd against the pass allowing 229 yards per game is nothing to hang your hat on.
Expect the Hokies to bring their lunch-pal ways at home against a high-octane offense where Beamer's boys will get the last laugh as usual.
No. 12 Florida Gators
4 of 5Florida's opponents' have gone just 4-9 and many question if they are truly ready for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Charlie Weis and Will Muschamp have had a ton of success as coordinators, but are they really ready to be become BCS contenders in year one of their regime?
Florida has an absolutely atrocious October schedule since they get the No. 1 team in the nation next weekend on the road in "Death Valley" where the Bayou Bengals are steamrolling teams.
I can't count on these Gators to knock off arguably the best program the past few years in Alabama. The Tide are the first favorites at the "Swamp" since 1999 and for good reason.
Their NFL ready defense will bring major issues to the Gators new pro style offense that still has some work to do. This could be a signature win for Florida, but I just don't see it.
John Brantley will have to play the game of his life and going up against arguably the most talented team in college football is an indication that this Florida squad could be in a spiral towards a brutal and tough October ahead.
No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers
5 of 5The Wisconsin Badgers have had more talks about their team than that next big time, sexy super model.
One could argue that supermodel is Russell Wilson and his recent play has lifted the Badgers to new heights as they are thinking beyond a Big Ten championship with a possible BCS National Championship in their grasps.
However, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are coming to Madison on a strictly business trip only. Bo Pelini has his troops healthy and I don't this Badgers defense has enough to stop the sensational play of Taylor Martinez and Rex Burkhead.
Everybody just believes the seventh ranked Badgers defense is amazing since they dominated the likes of UNLV, Oregon State, Northern Illinois and South Dakota State. Those teams have just been awful this season combing to a record of 4-11!
Those teams are absolutely brutal and while I am not making the statement of Wisconsin being the most overrated team in the country, I do not think they are easily a top 10 team.
James White and Montee Ball are a tremendous duo running behind the biggest line in college football, but can Nick Toon and Jared Abbrederis get separation in the passing game for Wilson?
It is one thing to stretch the field against Northern Illiinois, but going up against a healthy Alfonzo Dennard and a tough Huskers secondary will be no easy chore.
If Nebraska were to lose then certainly they would tumble out of the top 10 rankings, but I look for the Badgers to take a hard tumble down the ranks after they suffer a tough, close loss to the new kids on the block.
