Georgia Football: The 5 Best Defensive Players So Far This Season
Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is facing a lot of pressure to get his unit to do big things.
It has not been an easy task for Grantham, because transitioning from a 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme takes a lot of work.
But with the players in their second year in the system, they are starting to understand what's expected of them, and as a result, they are starting to make plays.
Here's the five best defensive players so far this season.
No. 1: Jarvis Jones
1 of 5Out of all the new players that have joined the team this season, no one has made a bigger impact than Jones.
He leads the team in tackles as well as tackles for loss. He flies around the football constantly and rarely misses tackles.
Things did not go his way at USC, so he decided to come to UGA because it was closer to home and he knew he could make an impact right away.
Looks like he made the right decision.
No. 2: Bacarri Rambo
2 of 5One of the biggest questions marks coming into the season was the secondary because they gave up too many big plays last year.
This year, the big plays have been limited, and part of it has been because of the play of Rambo. With four interceptions through four games, Rambo has a knack for making plays and knows where to be at all times.
There has been and will be times where he will get beat in coverage, but that has not happened a lot this season.
No. 3 Shawn Williams
3 of 5A good defense needs a player, or two, that strikes fear in opposing players each and every week.
The Bulldogs thing they have that in Williams as he has been playing safety as well as inside linebacker.
Williams knows how to hit and hit hard. He is very physical with receivers as well as quarterbacks. Williams will be better moving forward, and that's going to be a very scary thing for SEC opponents.
No. 4: Cornelius Washington
4 of 5Washington is a prime example of hard work paying off. Williams has not started in every game that he's played, but when he's on the field, nobody outworks the junior linebacker.
He is a very good pass rusher, leading the Bulldogs in sacks as well as QB hurries. He knows in role in the 3-4, and because of that, he is playing at a high level.
No. 5: Brandon Boykin
5 of 5Boykin is the team's best cover corner and maybe the most athletic player on the roster. He does not have the same numbers as Rambo, but Boykin is not challenged by quarterbacks because they respect his closing speed.
Boykin is also used on offense and special teams, but his No. 1 job is to be one of the leaders of the defense. And so far, he has done a good job.
