LSU vs West Virginia: 5 Reasons Why West Virginia Should Still Pursue the SEC

Johnathan CaceSep 24, 2011

There was a report this week of West Virginia getting denied by the SEC and ACC and that could be a serious problem for the Mountaineers.

Conference alignment may be on hold thanks to the Big 12 but that seems only temporary at this point.

It should not matter if the report of WVU’s denial to the SEC is true, they still need to move down south. Here are some reasons why.

Conference Prestige

1 of 4

The SEC is the king of college football and that likely won’t be changing for some time with their TV deal with ESPN and CBS. Really, any major conference is currently better than the Big East at this point but the SEC is the undisputed best.

Culture

2 of 4

The Mountaineers are frequent couch burners and take their football very, very seriously. That type of culture can be found all throughout the SEC, particularly the schools in the east which is where West Virginia would join.

Academics

3 of 4

West Virginia is not known for its academics but neither are most of the schools in the SEC outside of Vanderbilt. This was likely one of the main reasons why the ACC would reject the school but the SEC does not seem to have that stringent academic requirements.

Geography

4 of 4

Of all of the major schools with realistic chances of going to the SEC, West Virginia fits in the best with the geography. They are a day’s driving distance between all of the schools except Florida which is 830 miles away.

Unless Virginia Tech leaves the ACC which isn’t likely with their $20 million buyout, West Virginia seems like the next place to go for the SEC.
