College Football: Brian Kelly, Bo Pelini, And the Most Out Of Control Coaches
We've seen a lot of talk about Brian Kelly and his wild, angry behavior on the sidelines during the first two weeks of football this year—both Notre Dame losses.
But Kelly isn't the only college coach who likes to let off a little steam on the sidelines. In fact, there are others who have as much of a colorful history storming up and down the sidelines.
Some coaches stand stoically amongst their team, sternly watching the action and calmly calling the next play.
You won't find those coaches on this list.
Today, we're looking for the wildest of the wild, the craziest of the crazy. Here is our list of the most out of control college football coaches on the sidelines.
Brian Kelly
1 of 10If your team absolutely gave away two games to start the season, you might be a little red in the face, too.
A lot of people have been talking about Brian Kelly and his screaming and yelling on the Notre Dame sidelines so far this season.
There's even been talk about whether or not Notre Dame approves of this type of behavior.
But if you take a look back at Brian Kelly's career, this shouldn't come as a surprise.
Brian Kelly was a fiery coach at Grand Valley State.
Brian Kelly was a fiery coach at Central Michigan.
Brian Kelly was a fiery coach at Cincinnati.
Brian Kelly is a fiery coach at Notre Dame.
Clearly, he has a history of breathing fire. You can't honestly believe Notre Dame didn't know that when he was hired. Do you really think they didn't know what they were getting?
Maybe this is just the kind of coach Notre Dame needs right now. After all, it seemed to work against a very good Michigan State team this past weekend, didn't it?
Bo Pelini
2 of 10Bo Pelini's antics at Nebraska are well documented.
Pelini is a screamer, plain and simple.
Whether he's screaming at his players, the officials, his assistant coaches, or just himself, there's plenty of video showing Pelini screaming and shouting at everyone under the sun.
Pelini also has been seen grabbing the face masks of his players, poking them in the chest, and getting nose-to-nose with them at times.
While this is generally accepted at Nebraska as “Pelini being Pelini,” it's bears mentioning that there are college football coaches who have been fired or resigned for less...
Mike Gundy
3 of 10Pretty much everyone in the world has seen the famous rant Mike “The Man” Gundy gave about a newspaper article in a press conference a few years back at Oklahoma State.
Probably the best thing about the rant is the fact that the author of the article was sitting right in front of Gundy.
Gundy eventually directs most of his anger directly at her (from about 0:50 on in the video).
Sadly, the player who was the subject of the article transferred from Oklahoma State shortly thereafter, as he felt slightly emasculated by his coach's noble attempt to defend him.
Not technically a sideline rant, but it's just too good not to mention.
Mark Richt
4 of 10You really have to hand in to Mark Richt.
The guy really hasn't been that bad at UGA. He's 97-38, including a 53-28 mark in the SEC with two conference titles and four divisional titles.
He's led the Bulldogs to bowl games in each of his ten seasons (7-3) at Georgia, including three BCS bowls (2-1). Any way you slice it, that's pretty good.
And yet he finds his job in jeopardy.
Well, there are plenty of programs around the nation that would love to have Mark Richt as their head coach. Perhaps Richt knows that, and that's why he's been able to keep his cool in sideline interviews.
But Richt is a guy you don't want to cross. He won't hesitate to call a spade a spade, and in this post-game interview, he apologized to Vanderbilt fans for his players celebrating on the “V” at mid-field after UGA beat Vandy on the road.
The video also shows him screaming at and pushing his players for their disrespectful display. While some might not call that "out of control," we suspect it's just the tip of the iceberg.
As the 2011 season wears on, and Richt's seat gets hotter and hotter, we'll see a little more screaming and yelling out of him.
Mark Mangino
5 of 10Come on, KU fans, admit it. He was awesome and you miss him terribly.
Mark Mangino had plenty of great moments at Kansas, from waddling up and down the sidelines, to calling out the BCS and accusing the officials of basically fixing games to ensure Kansas doesn't make a BCS bowl, to screaming at a player for diving into the end zone on a kick off return.
Kansas football just hasn't been the same since he left...
WARNING: The video contains explicit language.
Bobby Petrino
6 of 10Bobby Petrino isn't afraid to speak his mind.
He'll be the first to let the referee know that there may have been a slight oversight on his part when it comes to calling penalties.
That's obviously an understatement, but as this video shows, Petrino at least gives the referee time to explain himself before Bobby starts in with the shouting.
David Bennett
7 of 10Yes, we know this technically isn't a coach out of control on the sidelines, but he's definitely out of control.
Any coach that can put this press conference rant together and then proceed to get trounced by—who else—the “Dawgs” is going to find themselves on this list.
This press conference might rank right up there with Mike “The Man” Gundy's epic presser.
Nick Saban
8 of 10There's not a whole lot of non-Alabama people that like Nick Saban.
If you asked Nick Saban, he'd likely tell you he doesn't give a (bleep), because he's not in a (bleeping) popularity contest.
Well, he's right. If he was, he probably wouldn't have left Michigan State simply for warmer weather and a bigger paycheck. Then, he wouldn't have ditched LSU for SEC-West rival Alabama.
Saban also isn't a guy that pulls his punches. In this video from a practice, Saban goes off on his defense.
If he gets this fired up during practice, just imagine the gems we'd have if he had a mic on during games!
Tommy Tuberville
9 of 10While coaching at Auburn, Tommy Tuberville wasn't exactly a fire-breather.
Perhaps that is what makes this video so great.
Tubberville has a legit beef with a penalty call.
Apparently no one told him that refs don't typically change their minds, and continuing to scream and yell will likely get you another 15 yards tacked on...
Les Miles
10 of 10Les Miles has several personality quirks, not the least of which is his famous taste for chlorophyl. Being cool, calm, and collected is not a trait among his game day quirks.
Les Miles can be one of the more animated figures on the sideline, and he's not afraid to let the officials know when they're erred.
