College Football Week 3 Predictions: 4 Bold Locks for Saturday

Carl StineSep 17, 2011

Thus far, "Road Test Weekend" has not been much of a test for the road team.

Boise State had little trouble dispatching Toledo on Friday night, while LSU's defense looked dominant in their win over Mississippi State in Starkville.

So what's in store for today?

We have a match-up of top-five teams, some old rivals squaring off and a top-ten team facing their former defensive coordinator.

Here are some bold predictions going into today that you can take to the bank...

4. Florida's Defense Will Get Torched

1 of 4

Florida has outscored its opponents 80-3 through two games.

Those numbers are a bit skewed by their level of competition, as the Gators have faced only UAB and FAU to this point.

When your stats come against non-BCS teams, they have a tendency to be a little inflated.

There is no doubt the Gators' defense is solid, but it gets a real test today against Tennessee super soph Tyler Bray, who has been lighting things up recently.

Bray scored five total touchdowns, four through the air and one on the ground last week. He accumulated 405 yards through the air, and has no interceptions through two games.

While I think he'll have one today in a Vols loss, I don't believe the Gators' defense will be able to stop Bray.

3. Ohio State Will Look Horrible Offensively

2 of 4

The Buckeyes have been the class of the Big Ten for so long that sometimes it's easy to overlook their flaws.

When looking at 2011's version, they are difficult to pass by; the offense is bad.

Last week, when they eked out the win against Toledo, the Rockets were daring Joe Bauserman to throw the ball downfield, and he couldn't.

The run game is anemic at best.

Blame it on coaching, blame it on the suspensions or blame it on global warming; I don't care. OSU has serious issues offensively.

Miami is explosive, and loaded with athletes on both sides of the ball. As long as Jacory Harris doesn't throw four interceptions, the 'Canes will get the "W" in this one due to the Buckeyes' inept offense and its ineffective flailing about.

2. The Spartans Will Fall

3 of 4

I'm sick of picking the Irish and losing. If I had even the intelligence of a chimpanzee, I would stay away from them this weekend as well.

However, I don't.

Brian Kelly's squad will finally get their elusive first victory this weekend.

Notre Dame has to be desperate, but Kelly is a good coach, and will point out some things to his squad to help them relax heading into this one.

First, they have had little difficulty moving the ball at will against either opponent they have faced thus far this season.

Second, they are not going to turn the ball over five times again today.

Third, MSU does not have a very good recent history away from home. They suffered a blow-out loss to Alabama in their bowl game, as well as a beatdown by Iowa that was their only loss of the regular season.

The Irish will win by at least a touchdown.

1. Landry Jones Will Struggle

4 of 4

I have said it before, and I will say it again: Jones has trouble on the road.

The Sooners are undoubtedly one of the most talented, explosive teams in the game. However, his production on the road has been nowhere near as good as it has been in Norman.

Those who are not blinded by their Crimson and Cream glasses will admit that Jones has the propensity to throw a ball or two directly at a defender.

Against a speedy FSU defense, he will have issues.

His record in true road games is 4-5, with 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

This is not to say that Jones' hype is not legitimate; he is a very good quarterback.

However, when one takes a step back and views things objectively, it can be seen that this may be the biggest test he has yet to face.
