Fantasy Football Rankings Week 2: Tony Romo and 10 Other Guaranteed Busts
Big-Things Poppin, well maybe for T.I. but not for this group of highly touted, low-reward players. Some of these guys have too much expected of them too soon, some will or have been injured and others are just not as good as they were once believed to be.
Of course, fantasy busts don't mean they have fallen off as a player but in some cases that is also the reality. QBs dominate the list but the other skill positions will be represented as well.
If any of these players are on your fantasy team, the move may not be to drop them. The more appropriate course of action would be to adjust your expectations and position your team accordingly.
As for the injured stars, they will ultimately become players you have to replace if they are indeed bit by the injury bug as their histories have shown us.
Here are 10 guaranteed busts and examples of dead-weight for your fantasy team.
10. Eli Manning
1 of 10Little brother is short on weapons right now. As good as Hakeem Nicks is, he is dinged and even if he is healthy, Eli has had most of his success when he's had that second dependable WR.
With Steve Smith joining the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles, Manning struggled in the preseason and it continued in Week 1.
Don't expect big things in 2011.
9. Andy Dalton
2 of 10I was worried about Andy Dalton from the beginning. He isn't in a good environment, he could be playing for a coach on the hot-seat if they don't start the season strong and now he got dinged in Week 1.
Bruce Gradkowski is the clean up man. If you are a starting QB, especially a young one, you have to hate that Gradkowski is your backup. He just comes in, rights the ship and either wins or keeps his team in games.
There is nothing more attractive for a team that figures to struggle. Dalton isn't a keeper in 2011.
8. Matt Cassel
3 of 10Cassel has more weapons than the Expendables. Jamaal Charles is an elite back, Dwayne Bowe is a stud at WR, yet Cassel has been largely inconsistent since the Chiefs were drinking the Cassel Kool-Aid and signed him to franchise QB deal.
Week 1's result was hideous. Only guiding the team to an embarrassing seven points in a beat-down at the hands of the Buffalo Bills is a terrible sign.
In that game, Cassel was 22-of-36 for 119 yards, a TD and a INT. That is only 3.3 yards per completion. What is worse is that the game was at home. Cassell is either doomed to repeat this performance or be benched. Either way, not a good play.
7. Steven Jackson
4 of 10S-Jack is a beast when he's healthy but right now he is not. He hurt his quad in the Rams Week 1 loss to the Eagles. Jackson makes this list not because of poor play, he did have 56 yards on just two carries. He is here because he is a big-back with almost 1,900 carries in eight seasons and he is 28 years old.
He's too high-risk to depend on as much as you probably are inclined to. He is what you call a trap-player, beware.
6. Matt Stafford
5 of 10Stafford shows great arm-strength, moxie and chemistry with his stud WR, Calvin Johnson. What he doesn't show is great durability.
All of Detroit took a collective gasp when Stafford limped off the field after floating a beautiful pass to Megaton for a TD in the Lions Week 1 victory over the Buccaneers.
Though this turned out to be just leg cramps, do you really see Stafford spending more time under center in 2011 than on the trainer's table?
Don't be duped, stay away or get a big-time backup plan.
5. Lee Evans
6 of 10Four targets, zero catches for Lee Evans in Week 1. The worst part about this scenario for owners of Evans in fantasy football is that even with this, the Ravens still blew out bitter rival Pittsburgh.
Surely the deep threat Evans provides helps open opportunities for others but there are no assists in fantasy football.
Evans won't pay off much in 2011.
4. Pierre Garcon
7 of 10The Haitian Revelation won't repeat the performance that made him an NFL epiphany in 2009. It is clear, the Colts have one truly outstanding wideout who will produce whether No. 18 is under center or not.
That man is Reggie Wayne, expect Kerry Collins, Burt Young, Jack Trudeau and whomever else the Colts can conjure up to depend heavily on Wayne.
Not good for Garcon owners.
3. Larry Fitzgerald
8 of 10Obviously, Fitz is still an elite WR but this is fantasy. Do the Cardinals have another receiver that will be able to open up opportunities for Fitzgerald? As of now, he is seeing tremendously difficult double and triple team scenarios.
Early Doucet did have a big-game but the Cardinals should have lost this game, meaning teams will continue to take Fitzgerald away until it isn't effective anymore.
Kolb targeted Fitz seven times producing a pedestrian, three catches for 62 yards and no TDs. Those are Earl Bennett numbers not Larry Fitzgerald. Watch yourselves.
2. Adrian Peterson
9 of 10I don't care how great you are, the genetically reproduced hybrid child of Jim Brown, Walter Payton and Barry Sanders wouldn't be able to run against eight-man fronts all game.
The biggest question mark in Minnesota is can they establish a passing game formidable enough to give AP a shot at having a big season? My answer is no. Will AP still muster a 1,000-yard season? Absolutely, unless he gets hurt, but don't expect 1,300 yards and his production from previous years.
Everybody and their mother knows he's coming because the Vikes don't have WRs capable of consistently beating man to man coverage.
So is he a fantasy bust? Yes, because most anyone that owns him has crappy backups at the RB position because you're expecting AP to carry the load 16 times this year. Unless the Vikes take Cris Carter and Randy Moss to the fountain of youth, it won't happen in 2011.
1. Tony Romo
10 of 10How long before Jerry Jones sends down the "suggestion" that Romo be lifted? I'm betting on or around Week 4 if the Cowboys have a losing record by that time.
How likely is that? Over the next three weeks the Cowboys travel to San Francisco, they host the Redskins and the up and coming Detroit Lions. Need more? After the bye-week in Week 5, the Patriots will be waiting in Foxborough in Week 6.
The question of whether he'll be a fantasy bust is skewed because he did have 342 yards with two TDs in Week 1. That said, you can't rack up fantasy points if you're benched. If the Cowboys continue to struggle, expect Romo to take the fall.
