College Football: Heisman Trophy Watch Heading into Week 3
Another fantastic week of college football is in the books, and now it's time to take a look at the movers and shakers in our weekly Heisman Trophy watch.
After two weeks of action, it allows us a clearer view of who belongs in and who belongs out of this list. So this week, there is much more movement in the middle of the pack than there was just one week ago.
So with that being said, let's dive right into the Heisman trophy watch heading into Week 3.
Just Missed the Cut
1 of 11Next Three In: Taylor Martinez, Nebraska; Case Keenum, Houston; Matt Barkley USC
Dropped Out: LaMichael James, Oregon; Trent Richardson, Alabama
Also Making a Case: David Wilson, Virginia Tech; Michael Dyer, Auburn; Vick Ballard, Mississippi State, EJ Manuel, Florida State; Russell Wilson, Wisconsin; Michael Floyd, Notre Dame.
10. Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State
2 of 11This Week: 12 receptions, 128 yards, two touchdowns in 37-14 win over Arizona
2011 Season Stats: 20 receptions, 272 yards, two touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: 8
Blackmon had another solid game Thursday night as the Cowboys defeated Arizona. He plays in the offense and has the ability to pull in double digits in receptions almost every week.
With several talented wide receivers in the game at the moment, Blackmon still remains one of the top two, if not the best, in the game.
Up Next: Sept. 17 at Tulsa
9. Chris Rainey, Florida
3 of 11This Week: 121 rushing yards, 45 receiving yards, one touchdown in 39-0 win over UAB
2011 Season Stats: 195 rushing yards, 112 receiving yards, four touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: Not Ranked
Rainey is coming off a pair of solid weeks in which the Gators have gone 2-0 under new head coach Will Muschamp.
He not only is a threat running the football, but catches the ball as well as any back in the country. That's not it with Rainey, though.
He's also a dynamic returner, as evident by becoming the third player in history to have a touchdown rushing, receiving and on a return in one game.
Up Next: Sept. 17 vs. Tennessee
8. Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State
4 of 11This Week: 397 passing yards, two touchdowns in 37-14 win over Arizona
2011 Stats: 785 yards passing, five touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: Not Rated
Weeden just puts up monster numbers. It's almost scary to think what they will look like at the end of the season.
It was actually difficult to decide between Weeden and Houston's Case Keenum, but in the end, there are only 10 spots, so Weeden gets the nod with a win over a better Wildcats team.
Up Next: Sept. 17 at Tulsa
7. Robert Woods, USC
5 of 11This Week: Eight receptions, 100 yards in 17-14 win over Utah
2011 Season Stats: 25 receptions, 277 yards, three touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: Not Rated
Woods caught a mere eight passes for 100 yards this week against the Utes. That would be a big game by most people's standards, but Woods set the bar so high a week ago with a 17-catch effort.
I'm sure a lot of people would like to see him higher on the list, but there is so much talent out there at the moment that the next six guys are hard to replace so early in the season.
However if Woods keeps having games like he's had so far in 2011, he could find his way to the top before long.
Up Next: Sept. 17 vs. Syracuse
6. Kellen Moore, Boise State
6 of 11This Week: No game
2011 Season Stats: 261 passing yards, three touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: 3
It's hard to punish a guy for not playing during the week, but that seemed to happen to Moore. With a big game on Friday, he likely will make the jump back into the top five.
Up Next: Sept. 16 at Toledo
5. Robert Griffin, Baylor
7 of 11This Week: No Game
2011 Season Stats: 359 passing yards, 33 rushing yards, five touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: 7
While Moore slipped a little while not playing this week, Griffin rose a couple spots. That's how impressive his performance was against TCU in the opening week of the season.
It's a shame that Baylor was off this week since everyone wants to see what he will do for an encore.
Up Next: Sept. 17 vs. Stephen F. Austin
4. Denard Robinson, Michigan
8 of 11This Week: 338 passing yards, 154 rushing yards, four touchdowns in 35-31 win over Notre Dame.
2011 Season: 436 passing yards, 200 rushing yards, four touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: 9
I originally started writing this at halftime of the Michigan-Notre Dame game and had Robinson out of the top 10 and Taylor Martinez in after a less than spectacular half from the Wolverines offense.
That's why you never write your stories too early; especially with a guy with the talents of Robinson on the field.
All I can say about his second half performance is wow.
Brent Musburger called him the most electrifying player in college football and that's accurate. Simply for the fantastic performance on the big stage, Robinson makes the big jump.
Up Next: Sept. 17 vs. Eastern Michigan
3. Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina
9 of 11This Week: 180 rushing yards, one touchdown in 45-42 win over Georgia
2011 Season Stats: 292 rushing yards, 40 receiving yards, four touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: 4
Some may doubt why Lattimore is so high on the list, but he goes out and shows why. He had another big game Saturday, helping the Gamecocks to a big win over Georgia.
He's one of a handful of guys in the nation who you give the ball to in a big situation and feel confident he will produce positive results.
There are a lot of talented runners in college football at the moment, but Lattimore tops the list.
Up Next: Sept. 17 vs, Navy
2. Landry Jones, Oklahoma
10 of 11This Week: No Game
2011 Season Stats: 360 passing yards, one touchdown
Last Week's Ranking: 2
Jones stays put at No. 2 for now. It's too difficult to drop the top two guys this early in the season, knowing what type of players they are.
He could see a drop though next week without a good performance against the Seminoles. Jones has a knack for not playing well on the road against good teams and will have to get over that next Saturday.
Up Next: Sept. 17 at No. 5 Florida State
1. Andrew Luck, Stanford
11 of 11This Week: 288 yards passing, four touchdowns in a 44-14 win vs. Duke
2011 Season Stats: 459 yards passing, seven touchdowns
Last Week's Ranking: 1
Luck was the preseason favorite to capture the Heisman Trophy and will remain in the top spot for the time being.
He's coming off of a solid four touchdown performance against the Blue Devils and will try to keep his stock high next week when the Cardinal visit Tuscon.
Up Next: Sept. 17 at Arizona
