College Football Rankings: 5 Teams That Got Screwed in AP Top 25

Austin FoxSep 6, 2011

The AP Poll has finally released their rankings now that Week 1 of the college football season is over.  Not many teams moved around a whole lot, but there were a few surprises.

Even though fans sometimes hate the college football polls, they always enjoy debating which teams deserve to be ranked higher or lower.

Here's a look at five teams who are unfairly ranked too low or teams that deserve to be ranked but aren't at all.

5. Maryland

1 of 5

The AP Poll came into the season placing Maryland at 44th in the country.  After Monday night's win, they moved up to 31.  Yes, that is a big jump, but the Terps probably deserve to be even higher.

Maryland went 9-4 last year and brought back a lot of talent this year.  With Randy Edsall now at the helm, they showed that they can be successful again in their opener.

A lot of people are downgrading the Miami win because of all the suspensions.  However, it's not like Miami didn't put talent out on the field with the guys they did have.

Jacory Harris was the most talked about suspension, but there was some talk that Stephen Morris might win the job even with Harris eligible.

With what Danny O'Brien did, throwing for 348 yards, there is no reason not to think that he can't repeat last year's success and lead Maryland to another eight- or nine-win season.

4. Northwestern

2 of 5

A lot of people were calling Northwestern a darkhorse Big Ten title contender, but then it was announced that Dan Persa would be out for the Boston College game.  However, even without Persa, Northwestern still went into Chestnut Hill and won.

Some people will downplay the win, though, because Boston College was playing without Montel Harris.  With him, the Eagles probably would have won.

Still, it was an extremely impressive win for Northwestern, as they moved up to 30th in the AP Poll.

They will likely start 3-0 now and could potentially be ranked going into the Oct. 1 matchup with Illinois.

3. Alabama

3 of 5

It's hard to say that Alabama got screwed considering they're ranked No. 3, but they were one spot higher coming into this week.

Apparently, their 48-7 beatdown of Kent State wasn't impressive enough for the voters.  Actually, the reason they dropped was because of LSU's huge win over Oregon.

Whether or not LSU deserved to jump Alabama can be debated, but it really doesn't make much difference this early in the season.

2. Oregon

4 of 5

Yes, Oregon did not look good against LSU, but regardless, did they really deserve to drop 10 spots in the rankings?  Oregon came in ranked No. 3 in the country, and they now sit at No. 13.

Turnovers and injuries are what killed Oregon in this game, especially in the second half.

This was actually a three-point game at halftime, as LSU only led 16-13.

Early in the fourth quarter, though, LSU had claimed a 33-13 lead, and the game was practically over.

A big reason Oregon lost this game was because of injuries to both LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner.  Freshman De'Anthony Thomas had to be inserted into the game and subsequently turned the ball over.

Oregon may not be as good as people originally thought, but they will still finish with an extremely good record because of an easy schedule.

Even though they looked pretty bad at times against LSU, they probably did not deserve to fall all the way to No. 13.

1. Arizona State

5 of 5

A lot of people were shocked when Arizona State entered the preseason poll unranked.  Well, they took care of business in Week 1 and still remain unranked.

To most, Arizona State is the favorite to win the Pac-12 South.  Their offense is a big reason why, and it showed on Thursday night.  They had 517 total yards, including over 200 both through the air and on the ground.

Brock Osweiler passed for almost 300 yards, while averaging an extremely 10.1 yards per pass.  Running back Cameron Marshall was actually the leading receiver, with 86 yards.

With Missouri looking extremely disappointing on Saturday, Arizona State's chances look great against them on Friday night.  If they win that game, they will certainly be ranked.

However, they do have a trip to Illinois quickly approaching that will be extremely tough.  If they win both of those games, they could remain the AP Top 25 for a while.
