Inter Milan Transfers: 5 Reasons Why the Nerazzurri Made the Right Moves

Alex HallSep 2, 2011

The summer transfer window has recently closed, but not before Italian powerhouse Inter Milan made a few splashes.

After finishing second in the league standings last season to arch rival A.C. Milan, the Nerazzurri showed they're pulling out all the stops for this year. Here are the top five reasons Inter made the right moves this summer.

Letting Go of Samuel Eto'o

1 of 5

There's no question that Samuel Eto'o was a great addition to the Inter squad, but with the Cameroonian making it clear he wasn't keen on returning to the San Siro, they made the right deal.

Eto'o will take his talents to the Russian Premier League playing for Anzhi Makhachkala. He's also reported to now be the world's highest salaried footballer—if not athlete—in the world.

The Associated Press has reported the former Inter man will make €20 million per season with his Russian team.

It's always tough losing an elite talent like Eto'o, but the blue and black made sure to find a more-than-qualified replacement for their departed striker.

Signing Diego Forlan

With Eto'o gone, Inter realized they need to fill his shoes with someone who has proven they can make an impact on the attack.

At Atletico Madrid, Diego Forlan and his teammate Sergio Aguero were two of the best at driving the ball into the back of the net in La Liga.

It's believed the Italian club will place the Uruguayan at the striker position, despite the fact he's always played forward for his previous clubs.

Regardless of where they put Forlan, he's going to find a way to make an impact on the game, most likely by scoring goals.

Locking Up Yuto Nagatomo

3 of 5

In a much less high-profile signing, the Nerazzurri were able to permanently acquire the services of Yuto Nagatomo from his previous club, Cesena, for €4.5 million.

Nagatomo will most likely ride the bench and primarily be used as a defensive substitute this season, but being just 25 years old, think of him as an insurance policy.

As great as Lucio and Javier Zanetti are for Inter, they're not getting any younger. Zanetti and Lucio are 38 and 33, respectively, and at some point in the future will begin to show that age more than they are now.

Nagatomo provides some depth at a vital position for Inter for the short term and could be the successor to one of the current starting defenders in years to come.

Acquiring Mauro Zarate

4 of 5

On the last day of the summer transfer window, Inter was not only able to sign Diego Forlan, but acquire Mauro Zarate on a season loan from Lazio.

With Giampaolo Pazzini, Diego Milito and Forlan making up the starting attack, Zarate will most likely be used as a substitute—and a fine one at that.

Last season with his former Roman club, Zarate recorded nine goals and seven assists. His new club will hope they can get similar production from their new Argentinian striker off the bench.

Keeping Wesley Sneijder

5 of 5

With all the newcomers to the San Siro, perhaps the greatest move Inter made during the transfer window as keep hold of midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

The Dutchman was one of the most highly talked about players in the rumor mill this summer, with links to teams such as Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United throughout recent months.

Sneijder however, was never tempted to leave his Italian club, telling David Lynch of Goal.com, "My feeling was that I was simply feeling very good at Inter. I love the club, but also the Italian culture and the people. It fits with me."

With Sneijder returning to his role in midfield for Inter, along with the combination of their new arrivals and returning members, the Nerazzurri are in prime position to challenge Milan for the Serie A title.
