Arsenal Transfer News: 5 Last Second Deals Gunners Must Make to Save Face
Arsene Wenger deserves to be lonely on the bench.
The French boss of Arsenal waited too long to make things happen this summer and is now scrambling to pick up the shattered pieces of his North London outfit.
Now, with only a few hours remaining in the transfer window, Wenger is busier on deadline day than he ever has been.
Gervinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Carl Jenkinson were added to the squad earlier this summer and these were solid additions. Unfortunately, they are not nearly enough to appease the Arsenal faithful.
In the past two days he has completed deals for Park Chu-Young, Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos. All were solid moves and will help salvage some of this campaign for the Gunners.
But the fans still want one marquee name and so far Wenger has failed to deliver.
Here are five possible last-minute deals that could help the 15-year boss save face this summer.
Mikel Arteta, Midfield
1 of 5We start with the one of the more likely moves at this point. 29-year-old Mikel Arteta is heavily favored at Everton, but Gunners have the ammunition to make the move happen before the window closes.
Arteta, if healthy, will be a good fit in the midfield to help ease the losses of Fabregas and Nasri.
The talks are still ongoing though and it appears to be very difficult to pull him away at the moment.
Reports indicate that Stoke has halted their interest in Nicklas Bendtner and he could be the possible piece used to help acquire Arteta or someone else elsewhere.
This isn't a complete fix for Arsenal though. Arteta is five years Fabregas' senior and it is a bit out of character for Wenger to bank on an older player.
All said, if they can get this deal done it will go a long way to helping Wenger salvage the campaign.
Yossi Benayoun, Midfield
2 of 5The 31-year-old Chelsea midfielder has reportedly entered talks with the Gunners.
Benayoun has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the last few days and now Arsenal have become the current favorite.
Benayoun's best performances in the Premier League came at Anfield between 2007-2010 with the Reds.
The Israeli captain missed the majority of his debut season with the Blues after rupturing his Achilles and he has now given his No. 10 shirt to new Chelsea mate Juan Mata.
Much like Arteta, the older midfielder is a bit of a curious move for Wenger, but the Arsenal boss has put himself in this position.
Benayoun is a big name, and if healthy will provide enough experience and talent to help hold things over for another year.
He's not a great long-term solution, but he'll help at this late hour.
Adam Johnson, Winger
3 of 5Moving for Adam Johnson will require a hefty bit of coin for Wenger, but he is the type of name that fans can get excited about for the long haul.
Unlike Arteta or Benayoun, Johnson is still young at 24 years old, and has his best football ahead of him.
There will be heavy competition for him if he is to leave City, but Arsenal stand to benefit more than most from his presence.
While less likely than the previous two options, Johnson would be the type of signing that could truly alleviate fans' anger with Wenger.
Arsenal would likely have to shell out more money than any of the other clubs that have guaranteed Champions League football to play.
Eden Hazard, Midfield
4 of 5French champions Lille insist the Belgian midfielder is not for sale.
In most cases we must believe them, but on deadline day anything can happen.
Hazard is only 20 years old and has tremendous upside.
He fits the bill of the type of superstar the Gunners would love to have for the present and future at the Emirates.
If Wenger can find any way possible to make a deal for Hazard, he has to consider it. He's dug himself a legitimate hole in North London, and Hazard is one of the few that can rescue him in addition to the moves made over the past few days.
Wesley Sneijder, Midfield
5 of 5It is a crazy concept, but if there is one player who has been on the market with worldwide superstar talent it is Wesley Sneijder.
The 27-year-old Dutchman has been linked to Manchester United for majority of the summer and he also garnered some interest from Chelsea.
He currently is starring for Inter and the Italian club just sold off Samuel Eto'o for much-needed cash.
This has cooled down any speculation of Sneijder leaving, but there is no denying the shock value it would have if Wenger could pull off the deal.
Again, it is highly unlikely, but if there is one player on the market that could help the Gunners forget about Cesc Fabregas it would be Wesley Sneijder.
