EPL Transfer Rumours: 7 Deals That Could Happen by the Deadline
English Premier League clubs have until Wednesday at 11 p.m. British time to trade players and sign free agents.
The summer transfer window is about to close and top clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are hoping to acquire the one player that will make the difference.
Other teams like Norwich City, Stoke City and Wigan Athletic want to add more depth to their squads in order to survive a tough season and stay in the EPL.
The following seven deals could happen before the deadline.
Per Mertesacker, Defender, Werder Bremen
1 of 7Arsenal is looking to improve their defense. The Gunners find themselves at the bottom of the Premier League after the humiliating 8-2 loss against Manchester United last weekend.
A player that could help fixing the holes in Manager Arsene Wenger’s defense is German defender Per Mertesacker.
The £8 million deal that would send the player from Werder Bremen to London seems to be in its final stages. Mertesacker is expected to sign a three-year contract with the Gunners.
Yossi Benayoun, Midfielder, Chelsea
2 of 7Arsenal is not only looking to improve their defensive unit, they are also looking for a midfielder with plenty of Premire League experience.
Chelsea midfielder and Israeli international Yossi Benayoun might fit this job description.
The 31-year-old Benayoun could become a much-needed stabilizer for a midfield that has been rocked by the departures of Cece Fabregas and Samir Nasri.
Benayoun’s Twitter account stated the following Monday: “Negotiating with several teams… news soon.”
Luka Modric, Midfielder, Tottenham Hotspur
3 of 7Tottenham has already rejected offers of £22 million and £27 million for their midfielder Luka Modric.
In a final attempt, Chelsea owner and billionaire Roman Abramovich has raised the teams’ bid to £40 million, according to the Daily Mail.
The 25-year-old Modric should provide missing inspiration for Chelsea’s stuttering midfield.
Peter Crouch, Striker, Tottenham Hotspur
4 of 7Stoke City is allegedly targeting Tottenham star Peter Crouch.
The Potters have already signed former Hotspur Wilson Palacios for £6 million and appear to have laid eyes on the 6’7” striker.
In two years with the Spurs Crouch has scored 12 goals in 73 appearances.
Stoke City will have to raise their offer of £11 million in order to land the striker, who is also on the shopping lists of league rival Sunderland and League Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
Owen Hargreaves, Midfielder, Free Agent
5 of 7The world’s richest soccer club Manchester City seems to be on the verge of signing former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves.
The 30-year-old Hargreaves was released by United earlier this summer.
The two-time Champions League winner struggled over the last three years with a number of knee injuries and appeared in only 27 games for the Red Devils.
According to the Daily Mail, Hargreaves was sighted leaving a hospital in Manchester Tuesday after three hours of testing.
Scott Parker, Midfielder, West Ham United
6 of 7Tottenham Manager Harry Redknapp said that a deal that would send Scott Parker to White Hart Lane is “very, very close.”
The 30-year-old Parker, who had been encouraged by England manager Fabio Capello to leave West Ham, seems to have already made his mind.
He told his club’s website: "I have had a fantastic four years at West Ham United and will never forget all the support I have had from the fans and everyone associated with the club…I hope the fans will understand and respect my decision and I wish the club every success in their fight for promotion this season."
West Ham reportedly wants £6 million for Parker.
Sulley Muntari, Midfielder, Inter Milan
7 of 7According to the Daily Mirror Tottenham and Fulham are in a race to sign Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Munatari.
The 27-year-old Muntari played for Sunderland earlier this year before returning to Inter on a loan basis.
Muntari joined Inter in the summer of 2008 from Portsmouth and signed a four-year contract.
“Muntari wants to play in the Premier League,” his representative Claudio Mossio told Press Association Sport.
