EPL Hot 11: Edin Dzeko, Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young Brilliant in Match Day 3
Sunday was a memorable day for a Manchester football fan.
City rode Edin Dzeko's four-goal effort in a 5-1 win over Spurs, while United followed up with a 8-2 win over the Gunners in embarrassing fashion. Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young were standouts in their matches, as Danny Welbeck, Luis Suarez and Ivan Klasnic maintained their own runs of good form, while a new Chelsea signing makes waves.
Every Wednesday, 11 footballers in the Premier League will make up the EPL Hot 11, a fluctuating power ranking that highlights the top performers over the course of the entire season. Dependent on their match-day performances, players may move up or down the list each week.
Edin Dzeko
1 of 11Edin Dzeko grabs command of the top spot in this week's EPL Hot 11 with a memorable performance in City's 5-1 result of Tottenham.
The big money signing from January's transfer window never really got a foothold in the club's offensive production, but the Bosnian has finally glued the pieces together for a fine start to the season.
Four goals in Sunday's triumph at White Hart Lane will give a load of confidence to the City striker, and with the form of the surrounding players, his production will likely remain positive.
Wayne Rooney
2 of 11It was a Sunday to remember in Manchester.
Hours after City recorded its 5-1 result, United thumped Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney led the action in fine fashion with a brilliant hat trick. Two splendid free kick goals from just outside the box plus a penalty gives Rooney five scores on the season with more to come. The England international also added a clever assist to Nani who chipped the goalkeeper.
This is the type of comeback many expected of Rooney, and if Sunday was any sort of indication of the type of campaign he will put down this year, United's chances of a repeat title will increase.
Ashley Young
3 of 11Say what you want, but Ashley Young has been the summer signing in not just England, but all of Europe.
The reported £16 million switch from Aston Villa has already paid huge dividends for Sir Alex Ferguson, as Young has helped guide a very young United squad to a perfect start after three rounds of league play and the top spot in the table.
Young returns to the Hot 11 after a week's absence with a fantastic effort in the club's 8-2 win over Arsenal. The 26-year-old compiled two stunning goals that he curled into the side netting along with three assists.
Chemistry at Old Trafford is brewing at a frenetic pace. Watch out, Premier League.
Luis Suarez
4 of 11Liverpool's in-form Luis Suarez didn't record a goal or assist in the club's 3-1 win over Bolton on Saturday, but the Uruguay international is in superb condition.
Like the weeks before, his presence for the Reds in the attacking third translates to goals.
Jordan Henderson's first goal for the club originated with Suarez's audacious outside-of-the-foot cross that Stewart Downing could have finished.
At Ajax, he was a goal scorer. With Liverpool, he has become a goal creator.
Looking back, surely Liverpool fans are ecstatic to have Suarez on their side instead of the ever-struggling Fernando Torres.
Ivan Klasnic
5 of 11Scoring goals has always been a good thing, and Ivan Klasnic has his third in as many matches.
Bolton dropped its match against Liverpool 3-1, with the Croatian netting the consolation goal in the 90th minute.
In 22 substitute appearances last season, Klasnic recorded four goals and an assist. Owen Coyle has done well to consistently have Klasnic on the pitch, as the 31-year-old has nearly eclipsed his 2010 production just three weekends into the 2011 campaign.
Danny Welbeck
6 of 11Danny Welbeck has been a bright spot in United's front third playing next to a very in-form Wayne Rooney.
The 20-year-old put up his second goal in as many games, but was forced out of the game with a hamstring injury in the 36th minute. He is expected to miss a month, which severely hurts his chances at maintaining his place in the EPL Hot 11.
Welbeck's injury couldn't come at a worse time, especially with United's offense developing great chemistry and goal-scoring potential.
Charlie Adam
7 of 11The former Blackpool captain breaks back into the EPL Hot 11 this week after dropping out last week.
Sir Alex Ferguson said that Charlie Adam's corners are worth £10 million by themselves, and he came through with flying colors on Saturday in Liverpool's 3-1 result over Bolton.
Adam delivered a corner leading to a Martin Skrtel goal before recording his debut score for the Reds with his right foot not two minutes later, which happened to have been his first ever with his weak foot.
The 25-year-old midfielder has been a pleasant surprise in all parts of the attacking third, serving as a great set piece specialist.
Samir Nasri
8 of 11How about that for Samir Nasri's debut with City?
The £24 million signing recorded three assists for the club en route to a 5-1 triumph over Tottenham.
City may finally have that creative midfielder that it has desperately lacked in previous seasons. And in combination with Sergio Aguero and David Silva, Robert Mancini has a plethora of midfield options who can create goals for themselves and others.
Franco Di Santo
9 of 11The former Chelsea player impressed in Wigan's 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers, the club's first this season.
In fact, Franco Di Santo was the only one on the scoresheet, recording a double in encouraging fashion. His first was a cracking volley in the 41st minute. Di Santo put up his second in the 66th minute with a slightly deflected shot that found its way into the top left corner.
Perhaps Di Santo is finally showing consistent flashes of brilliance that warranted Chelsea to sign the young Argentine striker.
Sergio Aguero
10 of 11Sergio Aguero was a mere footnote in City's 5-1 thrashing over Spurs on Sunday, taking a backseat to Edin Dzeko's monstrous effort.
Nevertheless, the big money signing continued to prove his worth with a sparkling run followed by a composed finish in the 60th minute.
Goals will be scored often given City's incredible talent, but distribution could see a fluctuation of City players in the EPL Hot 11.
Juan Mata
11 of 11The freshly-signed Juan Mata scored in his debut as a substitute in a lengthy extra time following a sending off of Norwich keeper John Ruddy.
Mata, a £23.5 million signing from Valencia, should provide an immediate boost from the midfield, as the Blues have been missing a solid holding midfielder who can drive the Chelsea offense.
The 23-year-old's goal was nothing to write home about, but given the transfer saga that saw Chelsea and Arsenal consistently swap positions as the front-runner to secure the Spaniard's services, Mata's performance in the next few seasons will be highly scrutinized by both sides.
