LSU Football: Jordan Jefferson Incident a Blessing in Disguise for Tigers

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

The investigation into the incident in Baton Rouge involving LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson is still ongoing. Many witnesses say it was Jefferson who kicked a man in the head during a bar fight.

Nobody knows for sure what happened that night and the details are still unraveling.

What we do know for sure is that, guilty or not, Jordan Jefferson will be punished, whether it comes from the NCAA or head coach Les Miles and LSU.

That means Jefferson will more than likely not be the starting quarterback for at least the first game, possibly the season.

That also means that somebody else on the LSU depth chart will get a chance to lead this talented team to a BCS Championship.

Jefferson was not the quarterback for this team anyway. Each of his three seasons have been mediocre and he really showed no signs of improving.

Last season he threw three more interceptions than touchdowns, averaging just 155 passing yards per game. That won't get it done in the SEC.

If the defense wasn't so strong and Stevan Ridley didn't run like the wind, this team would've been in the SEC cellar instead of finishing 11-2.

What are the chances that happens again?

Ranked fourth in the AP Poll, the Tigers have National Championship dreams. They're going to need a quarterback to lead them there.

This opens up an opportunity for Jarrett Lee or Zach Mettenberger.

Jarrett Lee is a senior who has much more experience than Mettenberger at the Division I level. He's thrown 17 touchdowns for 2,643 yards during his career at LSU. He's also brought the Tigers back on the board for fourth-quarter career comebacks—including a victory over No. 12 Florida in 2010.

Lee has a strong arm and provides the leadership that apparently Jefferson lacks.

The other quarterback is Zach Mettenberger, who has no experience at the Division I level, but has all of the tools to be a great quarterback. He has the NFL size and the NFL arm. There's no throw on the football field this guy can't make. His decision-making on the field is also pretty solid and he has tons of upside.

Mettenberger, only 20 years old, has a lot of maturing to do, but he is much more talented than Jefferson. He would also give the Tigers a much better chance for success with his big-play ability and jaw-dropping upside.

LSU is going through a rough time at this point, with the season almost a week away. But the bar fight that included quarterback Jordan Jefferson is a blessing in disguise: It gives the Tigers a better chance to win now that Jefferson is out of the picture.
