Manchester United vs. Tottenham: 5 Things We Learned at Old Trafford

Will TideyJun 7, 2018

Manchester United turned on the style in the second half to beat Tottenham 3-0 and maintain their 100 percent start to the new Premier League season.

Goals from Danny Welbeck, Anderson and Wayne Rooney gave Sir Alex Ferguson's team an ultimately comfortable victory and underlined the huge potential of United's next generation.

Here are five things we learned about United at Old Trafford.

1. The Fans Are Behind David De Gea

1 of 5

United's new goalkeeper David De Gea might be coming under early pressure from the media, but there's no question the fans are fully behind the young Spaniard.

De Gea was treated to huge roars every time he touched the ball, as the home fans were determined to show him he had their trust.

De Gea acknowledged them with a thumbs up during the first half and surely has taken huge confidence from his clean sheet.

2. Tom Cleverley Will Be First Choice This Season

Tom Cleverley put in another mature performance in the center of United's midfield against Tottenham.

His distribution and work-rate were excellent and he helped pick up United's tempo in the second half to achieve the win.

It was Cleverley's superb cross that set up the first goal for Danny Welbeck, and on this form he'll be one of Ferguson's first choice central players throughout the season.

3. Danny Welbeck Is a Confidence Player

For the first hour at Old Trafford Danny Welbeck was an unconvincing presence in United's attack.

His misplaced passes drew groans from the crowd and he didn't look capable of penetrating the Spurs back line.

But after heading United into the lead, Welbeck showed what we know he's capable of. Buoyant with confidence, he suddenly looked a different player and a real menace in the final third.

His back-heel to Anderson for United's second goal was a moment that hinted at another dimension to his play.

4. Anderson Can Reach New Highs This Season

4 of 5

Anderson was hugely influential in United's midfield at Old Trafford. The Brazilian picked his passes superbly and drove forward with real purpose at every opportunity.

United fans have always known what he's capable of, and you get the sense Anderson has a new focus this season and is desperate to show his full potential.

The ability and tenacity are clearly there, and with confidence building, he could be in for the best season of his United career.

5. United's Next Generation Defense Is Ready

5 of 5

United started with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans alongside Patrice Evra last night in a youth movement which can only bode well for the future.

Smalling barely put one foot wrong and was once again highly impressive at right-back. He's good in the air and quick and comfortable going forward.

As for Jones, it was a performance that had the United fans purring. The young central defender was tough in the tackle, calm on the ball and showed good authority all over the pitch.

Evans put in a more understated performance, but on this evidence, United have the makings of a back four to lead them through the next decade.
