South Carolina Football: Does Steve Spurrier Think His Team Is Overrated?
Uh oh, here we go.
Steve Spurrier doesn't think South Carolina deserves the No. 12 ranking in the AP poll and coaches poll.
Or does he?
No one knows. This is typical Spurrier—he knows as well as the fans do that this is uncharted territory for the program. He knows these guys are still kids playing in the brutal SEC, and these guys are definitely aware of the hype surrounding them.
So what does Spurrier do?
He sets up a scrimmage that definitely sets the offense up for failure (second and third-team linemen against starting defensive linemen), then rips them apart.
He says to the national media he believes they are overrated coaches and players.
What?
Now? Two weeks before the season starts, you change your tune? Seriously?
I don't buy it, Spurrier.
I am not an unreasonable fan by any stretch of the imagination; I am cautiously optimistic, not fanatically unrealistic.
However, I have seen the beast this team could be.
There is talent all across the field; scrimmages have revealed the Gamecocks to be a severely fast and smart team. The three-headed monster of Alshon Jeffery, Marcus Lattimore and Stephen Garcia cannot be ignored, and Jadeveon Clowney is scary—not to mention the other legitimate stars on the team (Devin Taylor, Melvin Ingram, Stephon Gilmore, Rokevious Watkins, Damiere Byrd, etc.).
I get the feeling this is typical Spurrier, trying to motivate the team to another level.
At least, that's what I am hoping.
Either way, it is great to be a Gamecock.
