English Premier League Power Rankings: Week 1
This week in the Premier League not many goals were scored, but when they were two clubs showed two newly promoted sides how to score in the Premier League.
The defending champions got off to a shaky start, as well three other top clubs who ended up in draws.
Joey Barton sparked some controversy and the London riots cancelled one of the better matches of the weekend.
Overall, it was a decent start to the season and here are the power rankings for the first week.
20. Queens Park Rangers
1 of 20QPR got a rude welcome back to England's top flight at home on Saturday as Bolton spanked Rangers 4-0.
The over 15,000 home fans at Loftus Road will hope for a better result from their club as they travel to Goodison Park on Saturday to face Everton.
19. Swansea City
2 of 20The Swans entrance into the Premier League was just like that of fellow promoted club QPR, a 4-0 loss.
Brendan Rogers and company went into the Etihad Stadium and taken down by Manchester City in the blowout loss.
Swansea opens up league play at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday when they host Wigan in an early preview of the relegation battle,
18. Blackburn Rovers
3 of 20In a rematch of last season's final day relegation thriller at Ewood Park, Blackburn were downed by Wolves after taking a one goal lead early.
Mauro Formica opened up the score sheet for Rovers in the 20th minute but the Blackburn defense could hold up and lost 2-1.
Manager Steve Kean also came out and said that he would like the Blackburn ownership to open their pockets for the transfer window, especially if Chris Samba leaves.
17. West Brom
4 of 20West Brom blew points at home on Sunday against Manchester United when Steven Reid was charged with an own goal and the Baggies dropped their home opener 2-1.
New signing Shane Long scored a 37th minute equalizer and Reid was charged with an own goal after he deflected an Ashley Young shot into the net.
16. Norwich City
5 of 20Norwich City were the only promoted club to earn a point this weekend.
Paul Lambert's side drew with Wigan away at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
Wes Hoolahan scored in the 45th minute to give the Canaries a late first half equalizer to put the club in sixth place in the table to start the season.
15. Wigan
6 of 20Ben Watson netted a 21st minute goal to open the scoring at home and for the season for Wigan.
The Latics did let in a equalizer late in the first half and were not able to take back the lead and ended up in a 1-1 draw.
Roberto Martinez's club did get off to a better start than last year's 4-0 loss to Blackpool and will look to record their first win of the season against Swansea on Saturday in Wales.
14. Aston Villa
7 of 20Shay Given made his impact felt on Aston Villa immediately as he came up with a few big saves against a feisty Fulham side on Saturday.
The goal less draw gave Alex McLeish his first point as Aston Villa manager.
The one disappointing aspect from Saturday's match was how little new signing Charles N'Zogbia got involved in the attack while being deployed right behind Darren Bent in the formation.
13. Fulham
8 of 20Martin Jol's debut as Fulham manager ended in a result that old manager Mark Hughes normally recorded with the Cottagers, a goal less draw.
Fulham were the more attacking side against Aston Villa but failed to get any goals past Shay Given.
After midweek Europa League play, Fulham head to the Molineux Stadium to take on Wolves on Sunday.
12. Newcastle
9 of 20Surprise, surprise Joey Barton found controversy on Saturday against Arsenal.
In his controversial clash with Gervinho, Barton got the Arsenal player sent off and brought the most excitement to a goal less draw at St. James' Park.
The Magpies are now preparing for the Tyne-Wear derby at Sunderland on Saturday.
11. Stoke
10 of 20Stoke earned a goal less draw with Chelsea at the Brittania Stadium on Saturday.
The Potters will make a trip to Norwich on Sunday after an away match at FC Thun in the Europa League on Thursday.
10. Everton
11 of 20Everton's opening game of the season was postponed due to the London riots and they will play a make up game with Tottenham in the future.
David Moyes' club now prepare to open the season at home as they host QPR on Saturday.
9. Tottenham
12 of 20Tottenham's first home match of the season was cancelled due to the London riots near White Hart Lane.
Before they visit Manchester United on Monday to open their league season, Spurs will visits Hearts in Europa League action on Thursday.
8. Arsenal
13 of 20Arsenal had a rough start to the season as they left Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri out of the squad as Fabregas left for Barcelona and Nasri is rumored to go to Manchester City.
There was plenty of action on the pitch as well as Gervinho was shown a controversial red card after hitting Joey Barton in the face.
With either eleven or ten men on the pitch, the Gunners were unable to find the goal and are looking to bolster the squad before the transfer window to replace Fabregas and Emmanuel Eboue who left for Turkey this week as well.
7. Chelsea
14 of 20Chelsea were unable to find the back of the net on their travels to the Brittania Stadium on Sunday and could not give Andre Villas-Boas a win in his Premier League debut.
The Blues now have two straight home matches against West Brom and Norwich, two games in which they should take full points from.
6. Sunderland
15 of 20Sunderland impressed on the road at Anfield on Saturday and earned a 1-1 draw.
Sebastian Larsson's 57th minute goal is an early candidate for goal of the year, as the former Birmingham player was one of the best players on the pitch all day.
5. Liverpool
16 of 20The start to the new era at Liverpool featured many of the players acquired in the transfer window and Charlie Adam proved why he is worth the money that Kenny Dalglish and company paid for it after his free kicks produced many goal scoring opportunities.
The Reds were only able to capitalize on one chance and that was early in the game in the 12th minute when Luis Suarez scored five minutes after missing a penalty.
Liverpool face a clash of the titans at the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal on Saturday.
4. Wolverhampton
17 of 20The answer to the question why Wolves sit at number four in the rankings is simple, they were one of the few teams able to win a game this weekend.
Steven Fletcher and Stephen Ward scored one goal a piece to bring Wolves back from a 1-0 deficit against Blackburn.
They may not be in fourth place for long, but let them enjoy for now before their home opener against Fulham on Sunday.
3. Manchester United
18 of 20Manchester United looked a bit shaky on Sunday on the road against West Brom.
Goalkeeper David De Gea let in a goal on a shot that could have been saved and if were not for a deflection off West Brom's Steven Reid from an Ashley Young shot, United may not have a full three points.
United will look to get back on track, despite a long list of injuries, Monday against Tottenham in the home opener at Old Trafford.
2. Bolton
19 of 20Bolton made headlines in the first batch of games on Saturday as they tore apart QPR in a 4-0 success away at Loftus Road.
Gary Cahill, Ivan Klasnic and Fabrice Muamba found the back of the net as well as an own goal from Danny Gabbidon to give Owen Coyle's club the win.
Bolton do sit on top of the Premier League table ahead of their clash with second place Manchester City at home on Sunday.
1. Manchester City
20 of 20Manchester City were the most dominant team this weekend as they came alive in the second half at home against Swansea.
Edin Dzeko and David Silva scored one goal each and Sergio Aguero scored twice on his debut off the bench at the Etihad Stadium.
Aguero could prove to be the most valuable signing of the summer for Roberto Mancini and company.
