NFL Free Agency: Which Team Will Sign Braylon Edwards?

Tyler WaddellJun 1, 2018

Gary Myers of the New York Daily News recently tweeted that the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins are currently the front-runners to sign former Jets' wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

New York added Plaxico Burress to the squad earlier today, virtually throwing out the idea of re-signing Edwards.

The 2008 league-leader in dropped passes (19) caught 53 balls for 904 yards and seven touchdowns in 2010, averaging a career-high 17.1 yards per reception.

Edwards made $6.1 million in 2010. He is currently in the free-agent market and is one of the more attractive players for sale.

Here is why he would fit on each of Gary Myers' list of interested teams.

4. Chicago Bears

1 of 4

The Chicago Bears' offense ranked 28th overall in the passing game (188.4 yards). Johnny Knox was the team's leading receiver with 960 yards and five touchdowns—21st in the NFL.

Offseason changes were forthcoming.

Chicago signed Dane Sanzenbacher, an undrafted free agent coming out of Ohio State, and brought in the former Cowboys' WR Roy Williams, and CFL standout Andy Fantuz in February.

Devin Hester and Johnny Knox will be returning, as well.

It seems as if the Bears are settled with their receiving corps in 2011 and are ready to make some noise. However, the signing of Edwards would just bolster their offensive attack even more.

3. Minnesota Vikings

2 of 4

With the Brett Favre era over (in Minnesota, at least) and Donovan McNabb ready to start anew with his Viking squad, hopes are beginning to rise for an improved 2011 campaign.

McNabb will have his hands full, however, as the Vikings return the 26th-best passing offense in the NFL (193.6 yards per game).

Minnesota brings its two leading receivers back to the field—WR Percy Harvin and TE Visanthe Shiancoe—but loses its deep threat in Sidney Rice to the Seattle Seahawks.

Although the offense will need all the help it can get, the Vikings agreed to terms with Michael Jenkins, meaning they probably won't pull the trigger on Edwards unless a reasonable deal is reached.

2. Tennessee Titans

3 of 4

Assuming Matt Hasselbeck wins the starting quarterback position over Jake Locker, the Titans' passing game should be somewhat better than it was in 2010.

But he'll need someone to throw the ball to.

Star receiver Kenny Britt was once again arrested in June on three separate charges. This hazes his future with Tennessee, making Edwards the perfect insurance pick up.

Britt had 42 receptions for 775 yards and nine touchdowns in 12 games last year. The 22-year-old is on the third year of his five-year, $9.459 million contract, but he could be released at any time.

1. Washington Redskins

4 of 4

Washington has a plethora of questions on the offensive end.

Statistically, it was horrible in 2010, ranking 30th in the running game (91.3 yards per game). This forced the Redskins to throw the ball a lot more often, resulting in minimal success (21 touchdowns to 19 interceptions).

Quarterback John Beck, who has started a grand total of four games throughout his career, is expected to take the helm this season.

If this stands to be true, Washington will need a lot more than just Braylon Edwards—but signing him would be a good start.

Santana Moss agreed to re-sign with the Redskins, throwing his signature down on a three-year, $15 million contract last week. He was the team's leading receiver with 93 catches, 1,115 yards and six touchdowns.

Former Broncos and Ravens receivers Jabar Gaffney and Donte' Stallworth signed one-year contracts with the Redskins, adding some needed explosiveness to what may be an ailing passing attack.

The WR position may be a little crowded, but Edwards would bring a certain asset that Mike Shanahan's offense has been missing for some time. Washington seems like the most applicable for the Michigan grad, but only time will tell.

Either way, Braylon Edwards won't be sitting at home on Sundays.
