Lionel Messi and the Starting 11 for a FIFA 2011 International All-Star Game

C. CuseOJun 7, 2018

Soccer is the most popular sport in the entire world and it might be the most unique. In no other sport are there a variety of renowned leagues where teams are filled with athletes from different nations.

The variety of different leagues and teams are great and reel in supporters from countries all over the world (huge Chelsea supporter here).

What we don't see in soccer, though, is an international All-Star game. What if there was one game every year where the greatest players in the world all suited up in matching kits to take the field? Who wouldn't watch that?

Let's take a look at a proposed starting 11 in a classic 4-4-2 lineup, for an international All-Star game of the world's greatest footballers.

Left Striker, Lionel Messi, Argentina

1 of 11

Lionel Messi scores goals and he scores in fashion. Messi has the best left foot in the entire world and there is no other player I would put up top on the left wing over Messi.

Messi is an Argentina native and has been the main playmaker on the national team since he was 19 years old.

He also plays for FC Barcelona where he scored 31 league goals last season in La Liga and certified his name on the list of the world's greatest players.

Messi is quick and his crafty foot skill makes defenders look foolish. He will be perfect on the left wing for the international All-Stars.

Honorable Mention: David Villa, Spain

Right Striker, Christiano Ronaldo, Portugal

2 of 11

Ronaldo would jump at the opportunity, and probably pop his collar, to be part of an international All-Star game on the world's biggest soccer stage.

Ronaldo is in his prime right now and he would be a dominant force attacking from the right side. Messi and Ronaldo would work extremely well together as Ronaldo would hold more as a target and Messi would be constantly moving off the ball.

Ronaldo scored 40 goals last year for Real Madrid in La Liga and his dribbling skills have become legendary. He is great at free kicks and being 6'1", he is an absolute monster in the air.

Look for Messi and Ronaldo to wreak havoc on opposing defenses as the world's two best goal-scorers line up next to each other up top for the international All-Stars.

Honorable Mention: Wayne Rooney, England

Right Midfield, Wesley Sneijder, Netherlands

3 of 11

Sneijder, who currently plays attacking midfield for Inter, would be the perfect fit at right midfield for the international All-Stars.

Voted 2010 UEFA Midfielder of the Year, Sneijder was given the nickname the "sniper" for his ability to deliver perfect passes and score from anywhere on the pitch.

Sneijder would be perfect on the right attacking side. He would consistently deliver perfect crosses to the forwards and would cement himself as a dominant goal-scoring presence.

His amazing play helped lead Netherlands to the World Cup final in 2010 and has created quite the reputation for himself with Inter and former team Real Madrid as one of the world's best.

Honorable Mention: Gareth Bale, Whales

Left Midfield, Frank Ribery, France

4 of 11

Frank Ribery is one of the most skillful and talented wingers in the game. He has amazing pace, skills and energy that will allow him to succeed on the left side for the All-Stars.

The Frenchman is one of the best ever for the Blues and former French star Zinedine Zidane referred to Ribery as the "jewel of French football."

Ribery currently plays for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and has had troubles staying healthy, but he could possibly be the best ever for the German club.

He has been named German Player of the Year and French Footballer of the Year twice, the only player to have both of those titles. Ribery would be a dominant and crafty force on the left side for the All-Stars.

Honorable Mention: Arjen Robben, Netherlands

Center Midfield, Xavi Hernandez, Spain

5 of 11

Xavi may be the best center midfielder in the world. He is extremely talented and trust me—he knows it.

He does not score very many goals, only scoring five for FC Barcelona, but what he brings to the pitch is extremely valuable. He is incredibly accurate with his passing and his playmaking abilities are magical.

The Spanish sensation led his team to a World Cup victory in 2010 and he was a key man in Spain's winning equation. Xavi might not get the glory for being one of the best due to his lack of goals, but he sure makes his teammates look great.

There could not be an international All-Star game without Xavi on the pitch dishing the ball to Messi and Ronaldo running around up top.

Honorable Mention: Frank Lampard, England

Center Midfield, Andres Iniesta, Spain

6 of 11

Spain has the best center midfielders in the game and anyone would be lying if they don't believe that Iniesta and Xavi should start next to each other in the international All-Star game.

Andres Iniesta is absolutely remarkable for both Spain and FC Barcelona. He has the ability to take over games and is one of the most consistent players in the world (remember his World Cup final goal?).

On top of all that, Iniesta can do it all. He has skill, speed, strength and when he wants, he can strike the ball from all distances. He is always consistent and seems to always will his team to win.

Iniesta may be one of the world's best footballers and it would be injustice to not start him for the international All-Stars.

Honorable Mention: Mesut Ozil, Germany

Left-Back, Ashley Cole, England

7 of 11

Ashley Cole has earned himself the title as the best left-back in the game of football.

The Chelsea FC star has been named to the PFA Premier League Team of the Year four times, and the UEFA Team of the Year twice through out his career.

Cole is a natural defenseman and is constantly a step ahead of opposing attackers. He is tenacious and has the pace and skill to attack from the defense line.

He is a star on Chelsea FC and the English national team and Cole is the best all-around left-back in the world today.

Honorable Mention: Patrice Evra, France

Right-Back, Dani Alves, Brazil

8 of 11

On a team filled with FC Barcelona stars, it doesn't hurt to add one more to the international All-Star team.

The Brazilian star, Dani Alves, is the best right-back in the world. His defense is always consistent but his offensive play is what makes him great.

Alves' creativity on and off the ball are far more exceptional than any defender in the world. He is always up in the attack and making plays that have helped Barcelona FC become the world's best team.

His impressive form for club and country are often lauded and he places fear into opposing defenses with his attacking skills. There is no other defender for whom you could say that in the entire world.

Honorable Mention: Maicon, Brazil

Center-Back, Nemanja Vidic, Serbia

9 of 11

Vidic is the best center-back in the world and shines on Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Vidic is the best because he will never make a mistake and never has. When analyzing central defenders, the most important thing is consistency and Vidic is as consistent as they come.

He is trusted by all of his teammates and has bailed out United time and time again. He is rarely ever beaten and works hard on every single play.

Vidic has a "no-nonsense" style of play and it has led the Serbian native to become the most trusted and solid center-back in the world.

Honorable Mention: Pepe, Portugal

Center-Back, Gerard Pique, Spain

10 of 11

I know, I know—another member of FC Barcelona, but at 24 years of age, Pique has already cemented himself as one of the all-time best.

The Spanish Pique has already won a World Cup and is the most effective defender on the Spanish national team.

His great ball skills and physical strength make him an unstoppable force and he'd be a great complement to Vidic on the defensive line.

Pique is still young and will wreak terror on opposing offenses for years to come. He will be one of the best to ever play and look for him in the international All-Star game.

Honorable Mention: John Terry, England

Goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, Spain

11 of 11

There is no debate here: Casillas is the world's best.

Known as "Saint Iker" for his club team, Real Madrid, Casillas has been a dominant keeper since he was just a teenager.

The Spanish goalie was the main reason why Spain won the 2010 World Cup. He commands the defense and stops shots that other goalies would not even contest.

His reaction time and flair for dramatic saves have made him an honor to watch. Casillas is the world's best—no question.

Honorable Mention: Victor Valdes, Spain
