Dominick Cruz Eyeing Superfight with Jose Aldo Along with Faber Rubber Match

Jordy McElroyJun 7, 2018

Dominick Cruz walked into the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., at UFC 132 the same way he walked out––with a smile on his face and the bantamweight title strapped to his shoulder.

Even though he was the world champion, Cruz was still relatively unknown to some fans and considered an underdog against former WEC featherweight champion and fan favorite Urijah Faber.

Fans witnessed the birth of a new star as Cruz bested Faber in a five-round war that could be an early candidate for Fight of the Year. With the win, Cruz avenged the only loss on his professional record.

What's next for the 25-year-old champion?

There are a plethora of 135-pound contenders already lined up including Demetrious Johnson, Brian Bowles, and Scott Jorgensen. These guys may make for solid opposition for the champ, but fans are already clamoring for the Cruz and Faber rubber match.

"You know, I'm not going to turn down a rubber match like that," Cruz said in a post-fight interview for The Gun Store. "Faber gave me a good fight and pestered me a little bit, but I still went through there and got the unanimous decision. I know I could beat him nine out of ten times."

As for other contenders in the bantamweight division, Cruz doesn't really think about who's in what position. Regardless of who the UFC deems as the next No. 1 contender, he is prepared to take on all comers.

"I just want to fight the best guys on the planet and keep improving. I don't think I am in a position to say who is in position for what," said Cruz.

Having defeated Faber, Joseph Benavidez, Brian Bowles, and Scott Jorgensen, there aren't many contenders left for Cruz to beat outside of Johnson and perhaps Brad Pickett.

What about at 145 pounds?

Cruz has the frame and skill set to make some noise in the featherweight division. If the UFC offered him a shot at featherweight champion Jose Aldo, Cruz admits that he would have no qualms about stepping up against one of the top three pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.

"I'm not going to turn down anything like that. I am not going to turn down a rubber match. I am not going to turn down a match with Jose Aldo," Cruz stated.

"Man, if they pay me the right money, I will fight anybody at heavyweight. I'll be running around like I am trying to catch a chicken in that cage, but I will get through it."
