College Football 2011: The 11 Most Combustible Coaches in the Country

Daniel BrommerJun 28, 2011

Combustible: capable of catching fire or easily excited.

There are plenty of coaches in the country who are capable of being combustible, but this list narrows it down to 11.

These are the ones who are easily excited on the sidelines, that doesn't always mean in a happy way.

These are the guys yelling at the officials, cussing out their players on the sidelines, racing towards the player who just scored a touchdown or screaming on the sidelines when players miss their assignments.

These are the guys who make college football exciting and fun to watch, while at the same time they make fans feel a bit of pity for the players that are on the opposite end of a good tongue-lashing.

11. Mike Gundy: Oklahoma State

1 of 11

I just need five words to explain this pick.

"I'm a man, I'm 40!"

Sorry Mike Gundy, but that automatically lands you on this list. Gundy is a player's coach and on that particular day, he was looking out for one of his players.

Gundy is the kind of coach who will scream on the sidelines until his voice gives out, but he's also the kind of guy would will run up and down the sidelines in excitement when his high-powered offense is running smoothly.

He's also the kind of guy whose facial expressions, much like the one in the picture, tell the story of how he's feeling.

Mike Gundy is definitely a coach who is easily excited.

10. Will Muschamp: Florida

2 of 11

Will Muschamp will get his chance to show all of the College football world just how combustible he is.

If you ever watched a Texas game within the past few years, you know exactly why he's on this list. Muschamp is that guy who is constantly screaming.

He's the kind of guy who will give a player a giant bear hug on this sidelines when he does something right, or he's the guy screaming into the facemask when the guy does something wrong.

Muschamp, for those reasons, is one of the more exciting coaches in the game. He's a very fiery young coach who will be showing his capabilities of combustibility.

9. Jimbo Fisher: Florida State

3 of 11

Jimbo Fisher is a very high-energy type of a guy. He's also someone who is very easily excited and animated on the sidelines.

Countless times last year, he was in the face of quarterback Christian Ponder and countless times, he was praising him with high fives or hugs.

He's a player's coach and he has their respect because of his coaching style. He's a no-nonsense type of coach who demands the most out of his players and it shows every Saturday on the field.

Fisher lands on this list because of his animation on the sidelines.

8. Bob Stoops: Oklahoma

4 of 11

I couldn't have found a better picture for Bob Stoops. Stoops is the kind of guy who is very cool and collective, but he's got that kind of "snap" tendency.

He can snap at any second. He's the kind of guy who will keep a straight face, but when something goes incredibly right or wrong, he will let you know.

As shown in the picture, he's been known to get into it with the officials from time to time as well as with his players. He's another coach who demands the most out of his players.

One thing about Stoops is that he's all about the arm motions. You can see him waving and thrusting his arms every which way during the game trying to get his players' attention.

Stoops is a guy who gets very easily excited in many different aspects of the game.

7. Mike Stoops: Arizona

5 of 11

Mike Stoops gets the one up on his brother on this list. Stoops is a very animated coach who is seen yelling on the sidelines for most of the game.

He's a very high-energy guy, and it shows. The veins in his neck and forehead look like tiny snakes. His face is usually blistering red, and he's usually yelling about something.

He's also the first guy on the sidelines to congratulate his players for doing something right. Stoops is a player's coach and Arizona is starting to see some success from it.

Mike Stoops just might fit the definition of combustible.

6. Steve Spurrier: South Carolina

6 of 11

The old ball coach. Steve Spurrier has to be on this list. He's had some classic meltdowns his entire career.

He called Florida State, Free Shoes University. He hung his head for most of the National Championship game against Nebraska in '95.

He's been known to scream at his quarterbacks during games and practices, but yet he still appears to be cool on the outside, but then he's an explosion waiting to happen.

Spurrier's antics on the sidelines and his words off the field are what makes him combustible.

Whether he's screaming at officials or players, or if he's hanging his head in disappointment, lost for words, he's a show waiting to be seen during South Carolina games.

His calm demeanor makes his explosions even more noticeable and shows how he is easily excited.

5. George O'Leary: UCF

7 of 11

George O'Leary reminds me of Bill Parcells; he was quite a temper.

If you haven't seen a Central Florida game, you need to check it out. O'Leary is hooting and hollering during the entire game. He's constantly screaming at his players and officials, and he doesn't hold anything back.

O'Leary is very high strung and it doesn't just end on the field. Back in 2008, he boycotted the Orlando Sentinel because he was unhappy about a piece they ran of him.

The Orlando Sentinel is the paper that covers his team's games. Enough said.

4. Bobby Petrino: Arkansas

8 of 11

Bobby Petrino's temper is something of legend. He is a cannon waiting to be shot. Petrino is no stranger to picking fights with his players, either.

Back when he was coaching the Atlanta Falcons, he got into it with then-cornerback D'Angelo Hall, which made for some good television. The two were screaming at each other in the middle of a game.

Then there are Petrino's comments about missed calls when Arkansas played Florida back in 2009.

Petrino is absolutely easily excited and someone who is prone to blowing up on the sidelines, which makes him combustible.

3. Les Miles: LSU

9 of 11

I love everything about Les Miles. He's a great recruiter, a National Championship coach and just a great ambassador for the game.

He's also a very animated and high strung kind of guy. He's the type of combustible that is mostly in a good way.

He's constantly clapping his hands and yelling out signals to his players. He's cool one second, then he's fired up the next.

Miles is a very calm and collected kind of guy, which might make this pick surprising, but he's the guy jumping up and down after a touchdown or after a big defensive stop.

The game last season against Tennessee was the most memorable. He was celebrating more than his players it seemed when his team won in the final seconds of the game.

Miles is another coach who's entertaining on the sidelines.

2. Bo Pelini: Nebraska

10 of 11

Bo Pelini might just be the most combustible coach in the country, he's absolutely in the argument.

If you watched last year's Nebraska game against Texas A&M, I might not need to explain myself, but for those of you that didn't see the game, Pelini was in the face of Taylor Martinez barking and screaming on the sidelines.

It even caused Nebraska fans to question the way Pelini was coaching, and Pelini had to issue an apology for his actions.

Pelini is a screamer and he's usually doing just that during games. He's very easily excited and a very animated coach. His antics on the sideline are something of legend and he's only been a head coach for a few seasons.

It's going to be fun watching Pelini in the Big Ten this season.

1. Nick Saban: Alabama

11 of 11

Let me start out by saying this. This is an opinion article and in my opinion, Nick Saban is the best coach in football. I respect him very much and I love what he's doing in Alabama.

That being said, he's the most combustible.

Saban has a short fuse and it shows a lot during games. If you watched the ESPN special last year on the Alabama squad, it was evident.

Any time a player messes up, Saban is all over him. He's a perfectionist, which explains why his teams are so good.

Saban is a very wired coach and he's full of excitement and energy, which is why he is on the top of this list.

It's almost as entertaining watching him on the sidelines as it is watching his team.
