Napoli Vice Captain Marek Hamsik Admits to Dream of Playing for AC Milan
For most of the summer now, rumors have been swirling about AC Milan's interest in Marek Hamsik.
The 23-year-old Slovakian has had a fantastic start to his career at such a young age. He made his debut in Italian football in 2004 with Brescia at the age of 17 and after the relegation of the club, he was a standout during both his seasons in Serie B. After playing 24 matches during the 2004-05 season, Hamsik earned a regular role as a starter, playing 40 matches with 10 goals the next season.
That season prompted a move to newly promoted side Napoli. Since then, he has become one of the best players in Serie A without question. He has quickly become vice captain of the Naples club and this year with the help of players like Ezequiel Lavezzi helped them to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

His play earned the attention of many clubs, chiefly the Italian champions, who are looking for someone to play the left side of midfield after the departure of Andrea Pirlo. He can also play attacking midfield, which could come in handy for Milan as well.
It appeared at first that a move was unlikely. Hamsik and Napoli were both against it while Milan at first seemed interested but then denied said interest.
Now, it appears things have changed as Hamsik has admitted to his dream of playing for AC Milan and becoming a champion.
In a conversation with Italian newspaper Pravda, and according to several trustworthy sources including Sky Sports and ESPN, Hamsik discussed his future.
"It's difficult to predict when is the right time to leave. I have grown a lot with Napoli in these past few years," he said. "I'm young, but I still haven't won anything. Not a league championship, not a cup competition. I would say that it's time to win something now.
"It's true that president Aurelio De Laurentiis doesn't want to sell me, but nothing is for certain. I speak to him regularly—he's fun and generous. I can talk to him about anything.
"Massimiliano Allegri and Adriano Galliani have praised me and joining Milan would be the turning point of my career.
"I don't want to leave Italy. I've been here for seven years, I've learnt the language and made my name here."
While Napoli would likely not want to sell a star entering his prime and with four years left on his contract, their love and respect for Hamsik could help if he wants to join Milan.
Milan recently revealed a budget for the summer mercato of roughly $71.5 million. President Silvio Berlusconi and CEO Adriano Galliani have promised a star player in this window, currently known as Mr. X. Mr. X is a midfielder with world-class talent. Hamsik is one of the most used names—along with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Cesc Fabregas, also among the top candidates.
There is no doubt that the club could benefit from a move for Hamsik. They have the money, they need a midfielder and Hamsik is interested in joining the club. It's a perfect situation waiting to be taken advantage of.
