College Football Recruiting 2012: The 10 Worst Classes in the BCS Conferences
While some teams are off to a fantastic start on the recruiting trail, gobbling up commitments and seeing top prospects make unofficial visits to their campuses, we have other schools who are on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Some of the programs on this list do have commitments, but their classes are shaping up to be lackluster and chalked with low-rated and non-impact players.
Here are the 10 worst BCS recruiting classes right now.
Kansas State
1 of 10Kansas State's recruiting class doesn't look good at all right now. Usually the Wildcats, especially under Bill Snyder's tenure, tend to lean on JC recruits for the gist of their recruiting classes.
Well, right now they have no JC pledges and just three overall high school commits. The highest-rated player is a 3-star LB in Will Davis.
If K-State doesn't get going on the trail, this could be one of the worst classes in school history.
Pittsburgh
2 of 10At first glance, the Panthers' recruiting class looks better than you think, as you see the list and you realize six commitments for Pitt in July is a solid pace.
Then you look at the players and see that four of the six commits are mere 2-star recruits and the highest-rated player is 3-star DE in Myles Hilliard.
Todd Graham is new on the job and I'm sure he's grinding, but quality has to be stressed a bit more.
Arizona
3 of 10'Zona is a surprise addition to this list as they are sure to pick it up on the recruiting trail. Yet, right now, their class looks like a "quantity over quality" unit right now.
They have seven commitments, but no player is rated at least 4-stars and three of them are actually 2-star recruits.
The highest-rated player is 3-star TE Taylor McNamara, a 6'5", 235-pounder with a solid skill set.
Iowa
4 of 10Iowa got off to a slow start this year as their first commitment didn't come until April and four of their five commitments have come this month in June.
Yet, I don't see any high-level, impactful recruits in this unit. The top player is 3-star WR Cameron Wilson, a 6'2", 195-pounder with solid route-running ability.
Iowa is not a sexy name on the recruiting trail, but they're going to have to pick it up as we move closer to next February.
Tennessee
5 of 10Really hate putting Tennessee on this list, but I have to—sorry Knoxville Nation.
Even though Derek Dooley has a 4-star commitment in the fold in 6'1", 175-pound WR Corey Smith, the Vols only have three pledges so far.
Smith is their top player lined up right now, and this is not a good class since Tennessee is one of the well-known SEC programs, so just by that notion alone they should have a better class than this.
But I expect the Volunteers to get going here real soon.
Colorado
6 of 10Colorado is basically in the midst of a complete re-boost, re-start and overhaul within every area of their football program. So it's understandable that they would make this list, albeit by default.
While they have five commitments and I do like their highest-rated player—a 3-star QB named Shane Dillon who has a quick release, pocket presence and solid escapability—I'm not a fan of this class as a whole.
There's no 4-star recruits right now and Colorado is not expected to make noise on the field in 2011. Jon Embree is going to have to be selling himself and the future of the program very hard as we go along.
UConn
7 of 10While I think Paul Pasqualonni has a great plan in place for the UConn program going forward, which includes really locking up the Tri-State area and Atlantic region on the trail, I'm not overly impressed right now.
UConn has seven pledges but the highest-rated player is just 3-star DT Mikal Myers, from Newburgh, NY, not Haddonfield, Ill.
UConn is doing OK so far, but a tad better quality of players is needed to boost itself up the recruiting class rankings.
Minnesota
8 of 10You look at the Golden Gophers' recruiting class right and you first think Jerry Kill is making a killing on the trail up north.
But in reality, Kill's nine commitment class is chalked full of 2-star and non-rated players. And to make matters worse, one of his commitments is a dreaded "soft verbal" from 3-star WR Andre McDonald.
Kill's going to be fine for Minny, and he will even start to get some top-tier recruits. But this year may be a tough one on the recruiting trail for him.
Kansas
9 of 10When Turner Gill was named head coach at Kansas, he stressed recruiting at about every turn he could while answering questions. But, the Jayhawks have not made a huge impact on the trail yet and 2012 looks the same.
The 2012 Jayhawk class, right now, is a three-commit unit with a 2-star CB in Daniel Gray, a 3-star OT in Brian Beckmann and a non-rated player in CB Derek Keaton.
Gill may be headed for one of the worst classes in the country.
Purdue
10 of 10Purdue has a two-commit recruiting class as we sit in June, with the top recruit being 3-star DS Jordan Shine.
The other commit is non-rated K in Paul Griggs from Charlotte, NC who just committed recently. The Boilermakers have always been a program that focuses on recruiting tough players and developing them with good coaching, but they need a spark this year.
They're not on a good pace right now.
