NBA Draft 2011: Best Case Draft Scenarios for All 30 NBA Teams
A possibly pending NBA lockout won't stop the owners from the 30 NBA teams and the top young prospects from gathering in Newark, NJ for the 2011 NBA Draft.
This year's draft class is not the strongest in history, but there is a talented pool of young players, both American and foreign, that will surely generate some stars in years to come.
Every team is in a different boat in terms of how many picks they have and how early they get to select. Nonetheless, here is the best case scenarios for all 30 NBA teams.
Atlantic Division
1 of 6Boston Celtics: The Celtics are a very talented team, yet nearly all their starters are veterans. The Celtics need to draft some backups for the future. With the 26th pick, they should take Boston College PG Reggie Jackson and with the 55th, take PF Willie Reed. This backs up both their front and back courts.
New Jersey Nets: The Nets have two relatively early picks. They would have had a higher one, but they traded it away for Deron Williams. They need to make that trade pay off, and build up talent around Williams. They should take Nikola Mirotic with the 27th pick. He has the size and ability to be Williams' and the Nets' big man.
New York Knicks: The Knicks badly need a center so that Amare Stoudemire is not their only big man. One that can play defense and shoot is ideal. Their best case scenario is if Jonas Valanciunas is available. If not, they can get Bismack Biyombo or Nikola Vucevic.
Philadelphia 76ers: The 76ers need a forward. Their best case scenario is if they can nab Tristian Thompson. He has the most potential from power forwards that could be available by their 16th first round pick.
Toronto Raptors: The Raptors have one early pick, yet it happens to be the number five pick. They need help all around, so they should just take the best player available. This will no doubt be center Enes Kanter. He has the size and talent to be a star. For the Raptors sake, they have to hope the Cavaliers don't nab him.
Central Division
2 of 6Chicago Bulls: The Bulls are in pretty complete shape, except that they need a more effective shooting guard to help out point guard Derrick Rose. They should make out pretty well; with their 28th pick, Butler's Shelvin Mack should be available for the picking.
Cleveland Cavaliers: No doubt the team that will make the biggest splash in the draft this year, the Cavs have the first and fourth picks in the draft. They should split these picks and get both backcourt and frontcourt talent, drafting Kyrie Irving and Enes Kanter, respectively.
Detroit Pistons: The Pistons are going to be a mess this season and need help across the board. With their number eight pick, they need to go with a big man, and the best available will probably be Jonas Valanciunas. After that, they have the 33rd pick. I like them balancing out their talent and taking a guard, perhaps Kansas' Josh Selby.
Indiana Pacers: The Pacers could use a stronger power forward than Tyler Hansbrough, so it will be tough for them to pass of Markieff Morris if he falls to them. If Morris is gone or they decide to go another direction, Tyler Honeycutt is not a bad option. Both of these guys are good scenarios for the Pacers.
Milwaukee Bucks: The Bucks need a versatile forward who can play defense and be a big scorer. Their best case scenario is Marcus Morris. If he is gone already, which I think he will be though, then Klay Thompson, who played his college ball at Washington State, isn't a bad option.
Southeast Division
3 of 6Atlanta Hawks: The Hawks have one pick in the draft, the 48th. Luckily for them, they have a pretty complete team as it stands. Their best case scenario is that they draft a solid backup, maybe Charles Jenkins out of Hofstra, who can play the backcourt as well as any.
Charlotte Bobcats: The best case scenario for the Bobcats is that they finally draft their franchise player. Every team in the NBA needs a star, and Marcus Morris has the best chance to be that guy for the Bobcats.
Miami Heat: The Heat are a super stacked team, so they will not be drafting a starter but a player who will play the bench and come in for minimal minutes every game. It looks like Mario Chalmers may not return, so a point guard wouldn't be surprising and good benefit Miami to back up Dwayne Wade. Darius Morris is a good pick for them.
Orlando Magic: The Magic don't pick until 52 players have already been scooped up. Their best case scenario is that their Eastern Conference rivals don't fare too well in their picks. When they do pick, they will take whoever has the most potential, regardless of position.
Washington Wizards: The best case scenario for the Wizards is that by some gift from the basketball Gods, Derrick Williams falls to their sixth pick. I don't see it happening, so they will probably draft Jan Vesely, who can shoot very well in addition to playing defense.
Northwest Division
4 of 6Denver Nuggets: The Nuggets need a strong power forward who can become a franchise star. They will have a few decent options to choose from, yet Trey Thompkins from Georgia will have the most potential to be that star.
Minnesota Timberwolves: They have the second pick of the draft. No question here, they have to take Derrick Williams. If not, it's only because the Cavaliers drafted Williams and not Kyrie Irving with the first pick.
Oklahoma City Thunder: The star of the Thunder is obviously Kevin Durant, so their best case scenario is to back him up. The Thunder are going to hunt for a small forward with their first pick, which is the 24th overall. Former Duke SF Kyle Singler may be the best guy available.
Portland Trailblazers: By the time Portland picks, they will no longer be narrowing down by position, but rather talent. I think they will nab Kenneth Faried from Morehead State, who is aggressive enough to get a lot of boards for the Trailblazers and plays excellent defense.
Utah Jazz: The Jazz pick third and 12th, so their best case scenario is to chose wisely and make the most of these great picks. They should take Brandon Knight with the third pick and cross their fingers that Utah favorite Jimmer Fredette falls to the 12th pick. The Jazz may make out better than any other team this draft.
Pacific Division
5 of 6Golden State Warriors: The Warriors need help across the board so the best option for them is to simply take the best player available. It will probably be a guard, either in the like of Alec Burks or Jimmer Fredette. With their later pick, the Warriors could also use a sleeper big man.
Los Angeles Clippers: Just like the Oklahoma City Thunder need to backup SF Kevin Durant, the Clippers need to focus on backing up PF Blake Griffin. Griffin is their star, and if he goes down, they need a viable replacement. The best option available when they pick at number 37 may be PF Rick Jackson out of Syracuse. He has the size to do it all.
Los Angeles Lakers: The Lakers are one of the most set teams in the league, yet they lack a dominant small forward. No doubt, this is the position they will go after. With the 41st pick in the draft, Chandler Parsons, out of Florida, is a very good pick.
Phoenix Suns: Phoenix has the 13th pick in the draft, which means that a decent pool of talent could still be available or a lot of it swept up, depending on what they are looking forward. They will most likely go after a forward, so the best case for them is to take whoever is available out of these players, in this order: Marcus Morris, Tristan Thompson, Chris Singleton.
Sacramento Kings: The Kings will just look to improve next season, and when considering they finished 24-58, this shouldn't be hard. With their number seven pick, expect them to take San Diego State's Kawhi Leonard.
Southwest Division
6 of 6Dallas Mavericks: The reigning champs will surprisingly not have one of the strongest rosters going into next season. They are complete, but their starters are aging and they need to draft backups and think about the future. They pick at the end of the first round and could take foreigner Nikola Mirotic to backup star Dirk Nowitzki.
Houston Rockets: The Rockets need to replace center Yao Ming. There are a few options, lucky for the them. They can hope Jonas Valanciunas drops to their 14th pick, yet if not, expect them to target Bismack Biyombo or Nikola Vucevic.
Memphis Grizzlies: The best case scenario for the Grizzlies may be to trade up. They don't pick until the 49th selection and since Zach Randolph may not return, they will need better talent than what they can draft at where they currently stand. Trading up is obviously, easier said than done.
New Orleans Hornets: The best case scenario for the Hornets is that Chris Paul re-signs. This is their main priority. To do this, the Hornets need to make the most out of their only pick, the 45th of the draft. They should take the best player available, and should cross their fingers that it is Rick Jackson.
San Antonio Spurs: Duke's Kyle Singler screams Spurs in this draft. He is a big time shooter and performed great in college. His shooting ability is what the Spurs go after. He should fall right about where they are picking and is the best case scenario for them.
