Ohio State Football: 8 Teams We'd Love To See on Future Schedules

Tim BielikJun 19, 2011

Ever since the incredible Ohio State-Texas game in Columbus back in 2005, the Buckeyes have for the most part made sure at least once a season to play a tough non-conference opponent.

Since the Texas home-and-home series, they have faced USC twice and will play Miami for the second straight season on September 17 in South Beach.

In future schedules, the Buckeyes will do home-and-home series with Cal, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Georgia.

With the tough slate of non-conference foes Ohio State has faced in several seasons, there are some teams most Buckeye fans might like to see their team face in future years.

Here are eight of those teams.

1. Boise State

These two programs were among the best in college football during the start of the 2000s, with Boise State being the breakout name in the sport, and OSU being a model of consistency.

The Broncos are one of only two mid-majors to win a BCS bowl game twice, along with Pac-12 member Utah, and their first in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl may be one of the greatest bowl games of all time.

Boise State went to Washington D.C and beat Virginia Tech and will face Georgia in Atlanta to start the season, so they are not afraid to face established powers by any stretch.

Although the Broncos have much more to gain by beating Ohio State than the other way around, this would be a very entertaining football game to watch.

2. LSU

Without question, the LSU team that Ohio State faced for the 2008 BCS National Championship Game was a much better team, and OSU only got in due to the avalanche of upsets at the end of the season.

This time around, OSU is a much more talented team while LSU always finds a way into the top tier of the SEC with a ferocious defense and some Les Miles magic.

Stylistically, these two teams are very similar in a lot of ways, winning with defense and running the football.

And while Luke Fickell may never be the gambler that Miles is, these teams should have a chance to play each other, as it may be quite a show of speed and talent on both sides.

Plus, it may be a matchup with two teams going into some of the most hostile environments in college football, with LSU traveling up north to The Horseshoe and the Buckeyes into Death Valley.

3. Texas

That 2005 game in Columbus, where the legend of Vince Young grew by leaps and bounds with an amazing late drive, should be enough to reignite another series with the Longhorns.

The 2006 meeting was not quite as close, as Ohio State won in a strong game over a young Texas team led by then-freshman QB Colt McCoy in Austin.

Texas should be on the rebound this season as Ohio State must pick up the pieces of the scandal that brought the NCAA to its doorstep this past spring.

But these are two of the most legendary powers in college football and should find a way to play against each other once again.

4. USC

Although neither matchup in 2008 in 2009 were classic contests like those in the 1960s and 1970s, these two programs had quite a history of meeting in Rose Bowls in the past.

2008's game saw Ohio State hit a lower point in terms of perception than what back-to-back losses in BCS title games to SEC teams did, and USC inevitably settled into their final Rose Bowl appearance under Pete Carroll.

2009 was Matt Barkley's arrival into the mainstream college world as he engineered a game-winning drive into the teeth of a record-crowd at Ohio Stadium.

With USC under heavy penalties and Ohio State possibly getting some rough sanctions as well, college football could see two of its most historic programs both going through down times.

But it's always a good sight to see the Cardinal and Gold clashing with the Scarlet and Gray, especially in Pasadena, but even just in Los Angeles and Columbus would work as well.

5. TCU

Speaking of the Rose Bowl, the most recent mid-major to push for a spot in the national title game was the first to not only make the Rose Bowl, but to win it, doing so over Wisconsin 21-19.

The Horned Frogs are one year away from jumping into a BCS conference, moving into the Big East after a second straight BCS bowl appearance.

Gary Patterson's name has been dropped into the discussion for multiple top coaching jobs, and some Buckeye fans are hoping OSU will give him a call.

TCU and OSU are known for fast, athletic defenses, and a matchup of these two teams might be quite the defensive struggle.

6. Notre Dame

6 of 8

Since these teams met in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State has been to five straight BCS bowl games, and Notre Dame has hit rock bottom, winning just three games in 2007.

But under new coach Brian Kelly, and with a stocked defensive-powered recruiting class in 2011, the Irish appear to be back on the way up to national prominence.

Although these teams rarely face off, it would be a great thing for college football for two of its greatest historical powers from the midwest to face each other.

The Irish had a strong finish to 2010, including a dominant victory over Miami in the Sun Bowl, and could be in for a strong season in 2011 with either Tommy Rees or Dayne Crist running Kelly's potent spread offense.

Just imagine the hype that another matchup between Ohio State and Notre Dame would produce all around the country.

7. Auburn

No two programs have been more under the NCAA microscope lately than Ohio State and Auburn have.

While Ohio State's transgressions have already merited some penalties with potentially more on the way, Auburn seems to be off the hook at the moment.

And in some ways, what Cam Newton did at Auburn this season is what many people expected Terrelle Pryor should have done during his full three years at Ohio State.

Stylistically, these teams couldn't be any more different, with Ohio State's pro-style offense and Auburn's high-octane spread running game under Gus Malzahn.

That matchup would be more than enough reason to tune into this game.

8. Oklahoma State

8 of 8
SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 29: Quarterback Justin Zwick #12 and guard Mike Kne #52 of the Ohio State Buckeyes line up against the Oklahoma State Cowboys during the MasterCard Alamo Bowl on December 29, 2004 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The Bu

This matchup would be very interesting based solely on the idea to coin the matchup as OSU vs. OSU.

These teams met in the 2004 Alamo Bowl, where Justin Zwick and the Buckeyes dominated then-Oklahoma State coach Les Miles and the Cowboys 33-7.

Mike Gundy has helped to make Oklahoma State a consistent winner in the Big 12 and a very fun team to watch in recent seasons with a high-powered offense.

It would be a very interesting matchup with the classic offense vs. defense hype.

And although Oklahoma State is not on the level of the elite teams in college football like the Oklahomas of the world, they have proven to be a tough out and that is something Ohio State would need to be very wary of.
