2011 NBA Mock Draft: Who Should Your Favorite Team Draft in the First Round?

Brandon GalvinJun 19, 2011

The 2011 NBA draft is less than a week away, which means everybody is scurrying the Internet, magazines and sports programs to get the most up to the second information surrounding every prospect and draft strategy.

This year’s class lacks legitimate superstars, but it is littered with solid talent throughout who could become All-Stars sooner than people predict.

Every team is now trying to figure out which prospect will inch them closer to the mountain top the Dallas Mavericks now reside over.

Should the Cleveland Cavaliers draft Duke’s Kyrie Irving, Arizona’s Derrick Williams or Turkey’s Enes Kanter No. 1 overall?

Who should your favorite ball club select in the first round on Thursday, June 23?

1. Cleveland Cavaliers (from L.A. Clippers): Enes Kanter, Turkey PF/C

1 of 30

Class: Freshman

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 255 lbs

2010 Stats: N/A

This professional wrestling fanatic is my No. 1 overall prospect.

Enes Kanter has a great low-post game, has range out to the three-point line, and can rebound and defend. He is a charismatic young man and will become one of the top international superstars in the Association.

With fear that he could be gone by No. 4 and with depth at the point guard position, Cleveland should go with the versatile big man.

2. Minnesota Timberwolves: Derrick Williams, Arizona SF

2 of 30

Class: Sophomore

Height: 6’8”

Weight: 241 lbs

2010 Stats: 30.0 min, 19.5 pts, 8.3 reb, 1.1 ast, 2.6 to, 1.0 stl, .7 blk

Minnesota needs as many talented players as they can get to put fans in the stands. Williams is an explosive talent with great leaping ability. He will be able to run the court with point guard Ricky Rubio and finish in dynamic fashion as he rocks the rim.

3. Utah Jazz (from New Jersey): Kyrie Irving, Duke PG

3 of 30

Class: Freshman

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 180 lbs

2010 Stats: 27.5 min, 17.5 pts, 3.4 reb, 4.3 ast, 2.5 to, 1.5 stl, .5 blk

Utah desperately needs a new face for the franchise and a point guard after trading away Deron Williams. Irving resembles Chris Paul more than Deron, but nobody will complain about that.

He is the quiet superstar who will demand respect on the court with his vision, passing and ability to create shots for himself.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers: Brandon Knight, Kentucky PG

4 of 30

Class: Freshman

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 185 lbs

2010 Stats: 35.9 min, 17.3 pts, 4.0 reb, 4.2 ast, 3.2 to, .7 stl, .2 blk

Owner Dan Gilbert needs to get the fans excited in Cleveland following the LeBron James era. Knight is a fantastic consolation prize to passing on Kyrie Irving.

He is an electrifying guard who is not afraid to attack the basket. A phenomenal athlete, he has the tools to be both a pure scorer and passer on any given play.

Unlike Miami, Cleveland would have two of the most important positions on the court locked up with Knight and Kanter.

5. Toronto Raptors: Kemba Walker, Connecticut PG

5 of 30

Class: Junior

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 172 lbs

2010 Stats: 37.6 min, 23.5 pts, 5.4 reb, 4.5 ast, 2.3 to, 1.9 stl, .2 blk

Toronto needs a replacement for Jose Calderon, but more importantly needs to create a buzz surrounding the team.

Kemba Walker is the ideal candidate for this squad. He is a superstar following the NCAA Tournament, where he displayed incredible leadership and clutch qualities.

The experienced point guard can shoot the rock with ease and create a solid foundation with DeMar DeRozan and Andrea Bargnani.

6. Washington Wizards: Kawhi Leonard, San Diego State SF

6 of 30

Class: Sophomore

Height: 6’7”

Weight: 225 lbs

2010 Stats: 32.6 min, 15.5 pts, 10.6 reb, 2.5 ast, 2.1 to, 1.4 stl, .6 blk

Washington needs a small forward for the future, and Kawhi Leonard might be the best in the class.

He plays bigger than his height suggests. He is a great rebounder and defender, which Washington is looking for to pair with center JaVale McGee in the front court. Leonard is also solid offensively, which will benefit superstar John Wall.

7. Sacramento Kings: Tristan Thompson, Texas PF

7 of 30

Class: Freshman

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 218 lbs

2010 Stats: 30.9 min, 13.1 pts, 7.8 reb, 1.3 ast, 1.8 to, .9 stl, 2.4 blk

Sacramento has a major void at the power forward position and the defensive end of the court. Tristan Thompson fills both needs, greatly.

He is one of the top defensive prospects in the class with his length and prowess. He and DeMarcus Cousins should form a destructive tandem in the front court.

8. Detroit Pistons: Jan Vesely, Czech Republic PF

8 of 30

Class: N/A

Height: 6’11”

Weight: 240 lbs

2010 Stats: N/A

Detroit struck gold with offensive center Greg Monroe last year. They now pair him with another great offensive threat in Jan Vesely, who can both shoot and drive to the hoop.

Detroit has a need at power forward, and Joe Dumars is not afraid to grab an international scorer.

9. Charlotte Bobcats: Marcus Morris, Kansas PF

9 of 30

Class: Junior

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 235 lbs

2010 Stats: 28.3 min, 17.2 pts, 7.6 reb, 1.6 ast, 1.8 to, .8 stl, .6 blk

Charlotte desperately needs to find a face for its franchise, and Marcus Morris could very well be that man.

He was a shining star at Kansas and is one of the top offensive power forwards in the class.

Charlotte has needs across the board, and Morris is a solid all-around performer.

10. Milwaukee Bucks: Jonas Valanciunas, Lithuania PF

10 of 30

Class: N/A

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 230 lbs

2010 Stats: N/A

Milwaukee pairs Andrew Bogut with one of the top international prospects in the class. Valanciunas could be a top-five selection in the draft, but falls to a great team to begin his career.

He is an amazing scoring threat down low with range across the half court. Although he has the size, he will not be relied on to bang in the paint as much with Bogut helping down low.

11. Golden State Warriors: Jordan Hamilton, Texas SF

11 of 30

Class: Sophomore

Height: 6’7”

Weight: 220 lbs

2010 Stats: 32.2 min, 18.6 pts, 7.7 reb, 2.1 ast, 2.1 to, .9 stl, .6 blk

Golden State adds ammunition to one of the more prolific scoring teams in the game.

Jordan Hamilton is one of the best scorers in the class. He more than makes up for his lack of slashing ability with his natural gift to toss the rock.

12. Utah Jazz: Chris Singleton, Florida State SF

12 of 30

Class: Junior

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 225 lbs

2010 Stats: 29.1 min, 13.1 pts, 6.8 reb, 1.2 ast, 2.2 to, 2.0 stl, 1.5 blk

Utah will lose their top defensive player Andrei Kirilenko to free agency, but they'll quickly find his replacement.

Chris Singleton is my No. 1 rated defensive player in the draft. He is a clear cut premier perimeter defender and can guard multiple positions with his size and length.

13. Phoenix Suns: Alec Burks, Colorado SG

13 of 30

Class: Sophomore

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 195 lbs

2010 Stats: 31.4 min, 20.5 pts, 6.5 reb, 2.9 ast, 2.6 to, 1.1 stl, .3 blk

Phoenix needs to find replacements for its aging stars Vince Carter and Steve Nash. Alec Burks is one of the biggest boom or bust picks in the draft, but heading to Phoenix will help him succeed in the league.

The team is expected to be more defensive-minded next season, but they cannot afford to pass on this prospect.

14. Houston Rockets: Bismack Biyombo, Congo PF

14 of 30

Class: N/A

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 243 lbs

2010 Stats: N/A

The Rockets need to add a defensive presence, and Bismack is one of the most electrifying in the class with his immense athleticism.

He has great size, strength, length, quickness and leaping ability, which all combine to help him become a destructive force blocking shots. He is a monster on the glass and should follow in Serge Ibaka’s footsteps.

15. Indiana Pacers: Klay Thompson, Washington State SG

15 of 30

Class: Junior

Height: 6’6”

Weight: 202 lbs

2010 Stats: 34.7 min, 21.6 pts, 5.2 reb, 3.7 ast, 3.4 to, 1.6 stl, .9 blk

The Pacers need a capable shooting guard, and Klay Thompson is one of the top pure shooters in the draft.

He is a sniper from behind the arc and will add the dimension Larry Bird is looking for to help push his team deeper into the postseason.

16. Philadelphia 76ers: Markieff Morris, Kansas PF

16 of 30

Class: Junior

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 245 lbs

2010 Stats: 24.4 min, 13.6 pts, 8.3 reb, 1.4 ast, 2.1 to, .8 stl, 1.1 blk

Philadelphia needs to add size up front to help control the boards and increase intensity on the defensive side of the court. Markeiff Morris will assist the team in both areas, but he is also developing as an offensive player.

He will become a fan favorite for this organization.

17. New York Knicks: Jimmer Fredette, Brigham Young G

17 of 30

Class: Senior

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 195 lbs

2010 Stats: 35.8 min, 28.9 pts, 3.4 reb, 4.3 ast, 3.5 to, 1.3 stl

New York is in need of another superstar name to put on the marquee of Madison Square Garden. They also need a shooting guard who can stroke it from deep, and Fredette has seemingly unlimited range in the half court.

He can handle the rock and will even attack the rim.

18. Washington Wizards (via Atlanta): Marshon Brooks, Providence SG

18 of 30

Class: Senior

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 190 lbs

2010 Stats: 36.5 min, 24.6 pts, 7.0 reb, 2.5 ast, 3.1 to, 1.5 stl, 1.2 blk

Washington needs a shooting guard to complete its starting lineup, and very few in this draft are as offensively gifted as Brooks.

With John Wall running the point, he will have a much easier time succeeding in the NBA.

19. Charlotte Bobcats (via New Orleans): Tyler Honeycutt, UCLA SF

19 of 30

Class: Sophomore

Height: 6’8”

Weight: 188 lbs

2010 Stats: 35.0 min, 12.8 pts, 7.2 reb, 2.8 ast, 3.0 to, .9 stl, 2.1 blk

Honeycutt is another solid defender Charlotte can add to its bench.

He could one day start at small forward or shooting guard, though he still has room to improve offensively. He is a better distributer than most give him credit for, which will help improve the ball movement in Charlotte.

20. Minnesota Timberwolves (via Memphis): Donotas Motiejunas, Lithuania C

20 of 30

Class: N/A

Height: 7’0''

Weight: 220 lbs

2010 Stats: N/A

Teams can never have enough big men to bolster the front court.

Donotas was a perceived lottery selection a few months ago. He can stretch the paint with his shooting range and will develop into a better rebounder and defender in the Association.

21. Portland Trail Blazers: Trey Thompkins, Georgia PF/C

21 of 30

Class: Junior

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 245 lbs

2010 Stats: 31.2 min, 16.4 pts, 7.6 reb, 1.4 ast, 2.5 to, 1.1 stl, 1.7 blk

Greg Oden is not a safe bet to stay healthy, and the Trail Blazers need to add another center.

Thompkins is an offensive and defensive threat, which this team is constantly looking for. He has the size and strength to bang in the paint and will develop into Portland’s long-term center.

22. Denver Nuggets: Kenneth Faried, Morehead State PF

22 of 30

Class: Senior

Height: 6’8”

Weight: 225 lbs

2010 Stats: 34.7 min, 17.3 pts, 14.5 reb, 1.1 ast, 2.6 to, 1.9 stl, 2.3 blk

Denver is always looking for ultra-athletic big men who can run the floor.

Faried has a nonstop motor and terrific work ethic to go along with his extreme athleticism. These characteristics made him one of the best rebounding and defensive power forwards in college.

23. Houston Rockets (via Orlando): Reggie Jackson, Boston College PG

23 of 30

Class: Junior

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 208 lbs

2010 Stats: 34.1 min, 18.2 pts, 4.3 reb, 4.3 ast, 2.4 to, 1.1 stl, .5 blk

Houston needs a point guard to run the show and Reggie Jackson, despite minor knee surgery in May, is one of the most underrated in the class.

He can shoot, penetrate and handle the rock with ease. He is built to be a great defender with his strength and also has the length to disrupt other point guards.

24. Oklahoma City Thunder: Jeremy Tyler, Japan PF

24 of 30

Class: N/A

Height: 6’11”

Weight: 263 lbs

2010 Stats: N/A

Oklahoma City has two quality big men in Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka, but they can afford to add a highly-athletic offensive threat like Jeremy Tyler.

He has a solid mid-range game but is also active defensively. He has the size, strength, quickness and immense athleticism to become a star with the Thunder.

25. Boston Celtics: JaJuan Johnson, Purdue PF

25 of 30

Class: Senior

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 221 lbs

2010 Stats: 35.4 min, 20.5 pts, 8.6 reb, 1.0 ast, 1.6 to, .9 stl, 2.3 blk

JaJuan Johnson is one of the most underrated prospects in the draft.

He is solid offensively with the ability to shoot from midrange. More importantly, he is an excellent defender with the size, quickness and length to play across the front court.

26. Dallas Mavericks: Davis Bertans, Latvia SF

26 of 30

Class: N/A

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 210 lbs

2010 Stats: N/A

Davis Bertans is a lights-out shooter with seemingly limitless range. He will learn from Dirk Nowitzki, who will help Davis become an all around fantastic player.

Davis has the makings to become a star in the NBA; he just needs to hone his raw, natural abilities.

27. New Jersey Nets (via L.A. Lakers): Tobias Harris, Tennessee PF

27 of 30

Class: Freshman

Height: 6’8”

Weight: 226 lbs

2010 Stats: 29.2 min, 15.3 pts, 7.3 reb, 1.3 ast, 1.8 to, .7 stl, .9 blk

The Nets need as much talent as they can get to convince Deron Williams to stick around. Tobias Harris would be a lottery selection next year as he has a ton of potential.

He should be a solid contributor off the bench as a rookie.

28. Chicago Bulls (from Miami): Justin Harper, Richmond PF

28 of 30

Class: Senior

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 225 lbs

2010 Stats: 31.8 min, 17.9 pts, 6.9 reb, 1.2 ast, 1.5 to, .6 stl, 1.2 blk

Chicago needs another scoring option off the bench. Although they have an amazing front court, offensive depth up front eludes the roster.

Harper can stretch the floor with his mid-range shooting gift and projects as more of a tweener than a legitimate power forward.

29. San Antonio Spurs: Nikola Mirotic, Serbia SF

29 of 30

Class: N/A

Height: 6’10”

Weight: 226 lbs

2010 Stats: N/A

Gregg Popovich’s staff has a nose for international talent, and Mirotic is one of the better in the class.

He has great size and shooting touch, which the Spurs need to stretch the floor in the half court. He will be excellent off the bench as a rookie and will quickly take over the starting position in a year or two.

30. Chicago Bulls: Josh Selby, Kansas PG

30 of 30

Class: Freshman

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 183 lbs

2010 Stats: 20.4 min, 7.9 pts, 2.2 reb, 2.2 ast, 2.0 to, .8 stl

Charles Jenkins deserves to round out the first round, but Chicago prides itself on its defense.

Josh Selby is one of the better defensive point guards in the class and would make a fantastic backup to MVP Derrick Rose.

They Control the NBA This Summer ✍️
