Tim Tebow: Is the Denver Broncos QB Worth All the Hype?

Frank PassalacquaJun 16, 2011

When the Denver Broncos open the upcoming season against the Oakland Raiders, only one man will start under center. That man is looking to be Tim Tebow.

Tebow posted unbelievable numbers while playing as a Florida Gator—putting up over 9,000 yards, 88 touchdowns, only 12 interceptions and 58 rushing touchdowns in four years.

Everyone who saw Tim play knew that he was something special.

It wasn't until the 2010 NFL draft, when the Denver Broncos shockingly selected Tebow with the 25th overall pick, that he knew he was eventually going to make an impact.

That chance didn't come until Week 15 of the 2010 season, when the 3-10 Broncos were in desperate need of change. Tebow started his first NFL game against the Oakland Raiders, who will ironically be the team's first opponent of the 2011 season. Immediately after coach Josh McDaniels was fired, everyone knew that the answer in Denver was Tebow.

With all the hype for Tebow to be a mirror image of how he played in Florida, Tebow went 8-of-16 for 138 yards, one touchdown and also a rushing touchdown. However, the Broncos lost 23-39. Although they seemed to have lost the battle, with Tebow as their savior, they thought they could possibly win the war.

The next game against the Houston Texans, Denver fans couldn't have been happier. Tebow threw for over 300 yards, with one TD and one INT, resulting in their fourth win of the season. Then in Week 17, they lost to the San Diego Chargers as Tebow threw two TDs and two INTs.

See a trend? Obviously Tebow grew into the NFL in just few games, but throwing five INTs in 2010 while only starting three games isn't the start Denver fans hoped for.

But looking at the other options the Broncos have in Brady Quinn and Kyle Orton, Tebow looks to certainly be the most talented. Yes, Orton has the arm and experience, but his 71:48 TD:INT ratio in five years makes many people have doubt. As for Quinn, he had his shot in Cleveland, but failed to capitalize.

Tebow, with much-needed offseason training, can improve his game greatly. In fact, with all this extra time with the lockout, I'm sure Tebow is using it very wisely.

A picture was released of Tim playing golf, and his biceps have at least doubled. That tells me that Tebow has spent his time hitting the weights, and ultimately preparing to be the starter for the Broncos in 2011.

So, is this former Gator worth all of the hype? I know one thing—when I think of the word dedication, Tebow comes to mind. And dedication will prompt this man to be a better player than he was in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

There is a certain amount of productivity he will provide, and people have to understand that. Tebow will never be an accurate quarterback by any means, but he can work his way around that. His legs are a great weapon, and have proved in the past to be just as deadly as his arm. He has an outstanding amount of power in his body for throwing bombs, just get used to a few of them being turnovers.

Denver fans should be happy that they have a player like Tebow on their team. He will get better, he will get smarter and he will be all he has lived up to be.
