Premier League Transfers: Top 5 Rumours of the Day

Neri SteinJun 16, 2011

The Premier League transfer window never sleeps. Manchester United and Liverpool have already made mega-deals signing English youngsters Phil Jones and Jordan Henderson, respectively, for mega-bucks, and they aren't done yet.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and more are just getting started, and they've all got long wish lists to fill.

Every club is looking to improve, and some of the biggest stars from last season could be leaving the clubs they broke out with.

Let's take a look at the biggest rumors of the day.

5. Spurs Reject Chelsea's Bid for Modric

Chelsea may think their chances of landing Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder are pretty slim because they've had a £22 million bid for Tottenham's Luka Modric turned down.

Harry Redknapp has repeatedly stated that the Croatian is not for sale, but if the Blues up their offer by a few million, it would certainly be hard to turn down.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have decided to give up on chasing Tottenham's midfield maestro with hopes of signing Sneijder.

4. Manchester Clubs and Chelsea Duking It Out for Alexis Sanchez

The Udinese winger has long been a favorite of Roberto Mancini at Manchester City, and now Manchester United and Chelsea have joined the chase for the Chilean Alexis Sanchez.

The 22-year-old is also apparently on Barcelona's radar, and his Italian club reportedly wants about £35 million.

Chelsea, who had a £22 million offer rejected in January, and City would be the favorites in a bidding war, but never underestimate the shrewdness of Sir Alex Ferguson.

3. Newcastle Is Imploding, by Choice

After selling a sure-fire future star in Andy Carroll in January, it seems that Newcastle isn't done.

Captain Kevin Nolan is on his way to newly demoted side West Ham, Jose Enrique has both feet out the door and Joey Barton is warning there could be more.

Nolan's contract talks broke down, and the Magpies want to offload Barton this summer because his contract expires next year, and they do not plan to extend it.

Liverpool obviously needs a left back, and if they nab Gael Clichy from Arsenal, perhaps Enrique will make the move down south. Or Enrique could simply move west to join Kenny Dalglish's Red Revolution.

Any team looking for a tough-tackling midfielder would be interested in Barton, but he wants to see out his contract with the Magpies.

The reason being so is because he wants to leave Newcastle next summer with nothing in return.

This is one way to stay in the Premier League, I guess.

Well, this should make Arsenal fans extremely happy. It's been quite a while since they've made a big splash in the transfer market, and it now looks like they will.

Lille's Ivorian striker Gervinho, 24, is reportedly desperate to play for the Gunners despite strong interest from Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle.

This signing would set Arsenal back about £10 million and would very likely push Andrei Arshavin out the door at the Emirates.

1. The Race for Charlie Adam Is Back On

Liverpool was a fraction—or a few million pounds—away from signing Charlie Adam in January with Tottenham also sniffing around, but Blackpool managed to hold on.

This time around, Liverpool is fighting Manchester United for the Scot's signature.

The Red Devils have reportedly offered £12 million for the midfielder after the Seasiders confirmed they had already opened talks with Liverpool.

United already beat Liverpool to Phil Jones this week. Will Adam be next?

I don't know about you, but it sure is nice to see Sir Alex Ferguson and King Kenny Dalglish fighting it out again.
