Ohio State Football: Lawyer Christopher Cicero Now Being Investigated
And the story goes from bad to worse.
According to Andrew Welsh-Huggins of the Associated Press, Christopher Cicero is being investigated for breaching a confidentiality agreement with tattoo shop owner Edward Rife regarding the OSU Buckeye memorabilia. This news comes just weeks after head coach Jim Tressel announced his resignation from the football team.
Cicero was reportedly going to represent Rife regarding the drug trafficking case. When Cicero and Rife met, Rife asked Cicero to verify that details of the conversation would remain confidential. Cicero reassured Rife he could speak freely. During the conversation, Cicero implied that Rife would need to merely return the aforementioned memorabilia and that Rife would most likely not serve any jail time.
When Rife consulted other lawyers though, he was told a jail sentence would indeed be part of the punishment.
Immediately after, Cicero emailed Tressel about the paid Ohio State memorabilia. Cicero stated in his email, "Just passing this on to you. Have a Blessed Easter."
Coach Tressel and Cicero continued to exchange more than a dozen emails regarding the subject. This led to an NCAA investigation and ultimately coach Tressel's demise.
According to the article, Rife will plead guilty later this month to drug trafficking and money laundering, and he could face up to 20 years in prison.
Comparatively, Cicero's punishment could range in severity, although it is a possibility his law license could be revoked.
What do you think, Buckeye fans? Does this change how you feel about the situation? Or are we just passing the blame?
