Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert's Clearly Not over LeBron: It's Time to Let It Go

Steven SlivkaJun 13, 2011

It didn't take long for Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert to kick LeBron James when he was down once again after the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat for their first NBA title in franchise history.

Fifteen minutes after the Heat walked off the court in defeat, Gilbert took another shot at his former cash cow, James on his Twitter account by posting "Old lesson for all: There are NO SHORTCUTS. NONE."

Okay, I get it. Gilbert is elated because James has yet to capture the ring for which he took his talents to South Beach.

Why can't he just let it go?

I was just as excited to see James go another year without a championship. After his "Decision" special and the ridiculous circus the Heat held at American Airlines Arena showing off their brand new toys before the season started, in which James guaranteed two hands full of championships, it was a true feeling of gratification when all that trash talking went for naught.

What Gilbert needs to realize is that despite all of his personal attacks on James after he left Cleveland, the Heat are still in far better shape to win a ring before the Cavs do.

The Cavaliers were the laughing stock of the Eastern Conference this year, losing an NBA-record 26 games in a row.

They finished with an overall record of 19-63, good enough for second-worst in the NBA, and were humiliated by 28 points in the extremely hyped return of LeBron James to Quicken Loans Arena in December.

A game in which James dropped 38 points in just 30 minutes, 10 more points than all of the Cavaliers' starters combined.

Cleveland fans are still bitter over James' departure from Cleveland. He was the hometown kid who was supposed to bring a ring to Cleveland.

It never happened.

But instead of holding his emotions in check like a professional owner should, Gilbert slammed James, saying that the Cavs would win a championship before the Heat would, and inevitably before James.

Seriously?

I understand Gilbert was frustrated with his super star, seat-filler fleeing Cleveland for Miami, but guaranteeing that the Cavs will win a championship before the Heat is ludicrous. It's too comical to even be taken seriously.

Does he really think that Baron Davis is the answer to bringing a ring to a city that hasn't tasted championship greatness since 1964?

Gilbert's latest Twitter post shows that he will never get over the burn he felt from James. He had every right to be upset about how James handled the situation. But get over it already.

I did not approve of James' televised "decision" by any means. It was childish, greedy, and a clear call for attention.

But as it stands now, James is still in a better spot to win a title than Dan Gilbert or any other Cleveland Cavalier will be for a long time.
