Dallas Cowboys: 6 Reasons This Will Be Jason Garrett's Last Season With Team
The honeymoon never lasts long does it? Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett helped pull the Cowboys season out of the ditch last year after the squad started out 1-7 under former head coach Wade Phillips.
But before Garrett took over as head man there was skepticism as to whether he even deserved the job. After all he was the guy calling the plays for Dallas when they were losing worse than Shane Mosley in a fight with Manny Pacquiao.
Did he deserve some of the blame or maybe all of it? Should Jason have been shown the door with Phillips because he was responsible for the Cowboys offensive ineptness?
Each question had validity but at the end of the day Jerry chose to go with the man he felt could best lead his team to a Super Bowl.
Now that Garrett has his first draft as a head coach under his belt and a couple of minor controversies, see Dez Bryant, the questions can now begin regarding his metal as a head coach.
While I believe Garrett has everything it takes to carry the ‘Boys to the promise land there are still a few questions that Garrett will have to answer before his has the full trust of the entire fanbase.
Here are six reasons this may be Garrett’s last season in Cowboy town.
Jason’s Failure to Call a Balanced Offensive Attack
1 of 6
The knock on Jason is that he only knows football from the perspective of a quarterback, which is to pass the ball. Soon after Romo went down with a broken collar bone last season Garrett started to ease up on passing the ball.
Felix Jones, Tashard Choice, and Marion Barber started to see a heavier workload and Dallas started to become more competitive. That was also due to the team’s change in attitude and demeanor but the way he would call games was a valid reason as well.
But with a healthy Tony Romo and a few new weapons on offense will Jason revert back to the vertical game?
For the record I believe his penchant for passing the ball won’t get him fired but it will continue to raise questions.
Garrett’s Use Demarco Murray, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice Properly
2 of 6
This one goes back to the Cowboys using a balanced attack but this time it’s in the backfield. Garrett will have a new toy in DeMarco Murray in the Cowboys stable of running backs and he will have a plethora of ways to use him.
While Murray won’t be the featured back in Dallas how will his arrival effect the amount of Carries that Tashard Choice receives? Better yet, will Garrett use Murray more in the slot than in the backfield?
If he cannot find proper ways to utilize all three running backs then this will be another criticism of Garrett and his way of calling the offense.
Garrett’s Inability to Co-Exist with Rob Ryan
3 of 6
Rex’s brother Ryan will be the Cowboys new defensive coordinator and his personality is just as big as the state of Texas.
Jason isn’t a defensive guy by any stretch of the imagination and I’m sure he’ll allow Rob to do his thing by his lonesome.
But Garrett is the head coach and while there isn’t a history of Rob making waves with previous head coaches he’s worked under what will happen if Rob starts to take the defense down a road Garrett doesn’t agree with?
Garrett’s a first time head coach and he’s going to face a few tests in his first full season, will this be one of the first?
I don’t believe that Garrett and Ryan will have any issues but the first time Garrett is tested by Ryan’s brash personality how will he react?
Cowboys Offensive Line Fails to Mesh
4 of 6
The Cowboys will have a few new parts on the offensive line, and it will be up to Garrett to figure out ways to best utilize them.
While offensive line coach Hudson Houck will be in charge of coaching them, head coach Jason Garrett will receive praise and blame based off their play.
Dallas spent their first pick in the 2011 NFL draft on former USC tackle Tyron Smith in an effort to improve their play up front, and if he fails to find a place on the line, then Garrett will get some of the blame.
There are rumors that Smith will play on the left side to protect Tony’s blind side and that Doug Free will move to the right side of the line.
If that happens and the decision to move the two doesn’t work out, Garrett’s leash gets that much shorter.
Garrett Fails to Control Dez Bryant Off the Field
5 of 6
Garrett didn’t draft Bryant, and if the Dez Bryant project fails to materialize, the onus will be on Jerry Jones and not Dez Bryant.
But while Bryant isn’t a full blown Terrell Owens, there have been a few signs that he has that potential in him.
There has been more focus on Bryant’s off the field behavior than on what he actually does on it.
No arrests, no locker room confrontations and no meetings with the league’s commissioner to talk about what’s going on in Bryant’s life.
But with so much negative publicity coming out regarding the former Oklahoma State receiver, it’s a little tough to judge what’s real and what’s just for press.
If the fiery wide receiver starts to get a little out hand and Garrett can’t control him, then Jason’s leadership ability will be called into question, and Jerry may feel the need to pull the trigger before things get out of hand.
Garrett Fails to Lead the Cowboys to the Playoffs
6 of 6
This reason is No. 1 because it deals with a championship. But before any talk about can begin about the Cowboys gracing the field of Lucas Oil Stadium in February the team has to make the playoffs first.
The Cowboys have always had great talent, and 2011 will be no different. The running core will be strong as well as the wide receivers, and a healthy Tony Romo should mean big things for the’Boys.
But if Dallas fails to make it to the second season, then this won’t be the first time the team hasn’t played up to what’s expected of them.
Garrett is charged with bringing a Super Bowl title back to Dallas, and while many aren’t expecting it to happen this season, fans have a healthy thirst for one in the very near future.
If Jason cannot lead Dallas to the playoffs this season or the team fails to have a winning season, then I hope the Garrett’s have a good real estate agent.
